Having seen the abyss of hell for sentient beings, then seeing oneself returning without being harmed or damaged. Son of the lineage, the preliminary sign for the eighth bodhisattva level of a bodhisattva mahāsattva is: on both shoulders, seeing the lion, king of the mountains, with a mane, wearing a crown, causing all small wild animals to be afraid and abiding. Son of the lineage, the preliminary sign for the ninth bodhisattva level of a bodhisattva mahāsattva is: seeing a wheel-turning king, surrounded by countless billions of people, looking ahead, and holding a white umbrella adorned with various jewels on his head. Son of the lineage, the preliminary sign for the tenth bodhisattva level of a bodhisattva mahāsattva is: seeing the body of the Tathāgata, the color like gold, the light a fathom, surrounded by countless billions of Brahmās, looking ahead and teaching the Dharma. Son of the lineage, these ten are the preliminary signs of the ten bodhisattva levels of the bodhisattva mahāsattvas. Then, son of the lineage, why is the first level called the Joyful Level? Because the first supramundane mind that was not previously attained manifests, and because of the perfection of the intention of great meaning, great joy arises, therefore the first level is called the Joyful Level. In order to completely purify the stains of subtle downfalls and all faults of discipline, the second level is called the Stainless Level. Because the light of immeasurable wisdom and samādhi wisdom cannot be moved, cannot be overcome by anything, and abides in the dhāraṇī that holds hearing, the third level is called the Illuminating Level. Because the fire of wisdom burns all afflictions, and the light of the fire of meditation on the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment increases greatly, the fourth level is called the Blazing Wisdom Level. Because of taming the method of meditating on that, the supreme wisdom that is difficult to control, and the afflictions that are difficult to tame, which are abandoned by seeing and meditating, the fifth level is called the Very Difficult to Train Level.
