Thus he entreated, and the Blessed One declared: 'It is so. O sons of good family, therefore, from this Sutra of Golden Light, even one word, one verse, one chapter, or even a section, you should recite it correctly, hold it, contemplate it, and practice it completely. If you show and propagate it widely to all beings for the sake of the long-term benefit, welfare, and happiness of many sentient beings, then you will possess an immeasurable accumulation of merit.' Thus the Blessed One declared, and they greatly praised what the Blessed One had spoken. This concludes the fifth chapter, entitled 'Severing the Continuity of Karmic Obscurations,' from the King of Sutras, the Supreme Golden Light. Volume Four. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva Inexhaustible Intelligence rose from his seat, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with palms joined, bowed towards the Blessed One. He offered the Blessed One umbrellas made of various precious flowers and showers of flowers, and then addressed the Blessed One thus: 'Blessed One, what is called the mind of enlightenment, the mind of enlightenment, Blessed One, to what extent does a Bodhisattva possess the mind of enlightenment? Blessed One, what is the mind of enlightenment? Blessed One, for enlightenment, neither the mind nor the Bodhisattva is observed. Non-observation also does not become an object of observation. Even apart from enlightenment, the mind of enlightenment is not observed, because enlightenment is unspeakable, the mind is formless, cannot be indicated, is unimpeded, is without discrimination, and the Bodhisattva also cannot be observed. So, Blessed One, how am I to understand the meaning of these dharmas?' The Blessed One declared: 'Son of good family, for enlightenment here, neither a symbol, a designation, nor a name is observed, nor is the mind of enlightenment observed apart from enlightenment, and enlightenment is unspeakable, the mind is formless, cannot be indicated, is unimpeded, is without discrimination, and the Bodhisattva also cannot be observed.' Why is that? Because enlightenment is unspeakable, as enlightenment is, so is the mind. As the mind is, so is enlightenment.

Just as enlightenment and mind are, so are the bodhisattvas. Just as the bodhisattvas are, so are all the dharmas that have arisen in the past, future, and present. Son of good family, in this way, a bodhisattva mahasattva obtains the name of bodhisattva. That mind that follows all dharmas is called the mind of enlightenment. Enlightenment is not past, future, or present, and so is the mind. Since all dharmas are unobservable, nothing is found in this, there is neither enlightenment, nor the imputation of enlightenment, neither sentient beings, nor the imputation of sentient beings, neither shravakas, nor the imputation of shravakas, neither pratyekabuddhas, nor the imputation of pratyekabuddhas, neither bodhisattvas, nor the imputation of bodhisattvas, neither buddhas, nor the imputation of buddhas, neither conditioned things, nor the imputation of conditioned things, neither unconditioned things, nor the imputation of unconditioned things, it is unobservable and will not become observable. Son of good family, nevertheless, for example, like Mount Meru, the first mind, which is completely superior with all roots of virtue, arises, and its cause is the perfection of generosity. The second mind of arising is to regard it like the earth in the manner of the place of activity of all dharmas, and its cause is the perfection of discipline. The third mind of arising is in the manner of fearlessness, lack of apprehension, and lack of dread, to regard it like the prowess of a lion, the king of beasts with a mane, and its cause is the perfection of patience. The fourth mind of arising is in the manner of non-retrogression, to regard it like the power, strength, vehemence, diligence, and asceticism of the son of Sredmed (Thirstless), and its cause is the perfection of diligence. The fifth mind of arising is in the manner of not being satisfied with merit, to regard it as completely superior with various virtues, and its cause is the perfection of meditation. The sixth mind of arising is in the manner of dispelling darkness, great darkness, to regard it like the sun's disc shining brightly, its cause is the perfection of wisdom.
