That consort, the queen, seeing her faint and fall to the ground, cried out loudly, grief-stricken and terrified, losing her senses. When the king heard those words, he was unable to contain his grief. He summoned all the ministers and sent them out to search for his beloved son. Everyone went out of the city, searching everywhere. Crying, they said to many people, "Where is the prince? Is he alive or dead? Who knows where he has gone? How can we see him and dispel our sorrow?" All the many people said that the prince was dead, and all who heard it were deeply grieved, their lamentations and suffering beyond description. At that time, the great king in his chariot, uttering cries of sorrow, rose from his seat and went to the queen's side, sprinkling water on her body. When the queen was sprinkled with water, after a long time, she regained consciousness, and weeping, asked the king, "Where is my son now?" The king consoled the queen, saying, "I have sent out many messengers, ordering them to search for the prince in all four directions, but still no news has come. The king also consoled the queen, saying, "Do not grieve, but for a while make yourself happy, and let us go out together to search." Then the king and queen together, riding in their vehicle, went forward, uttering sorrowful cries, their hearts burning with grief like a fire. Hundreds and thousands of wise and foolish people followed the king out of the city, constantly uttering cries of sorrow, each searching for the prince. The king, in order to search for his beloved son, looked with his eyes in all four directions, and saw a person with disheveled hair, his body smeared with blood, his whole body covered with dust, coming forward weeping. When the king saw that inauspicious sign, he became even more grieved. The king raised both hands, weeping with sorrow, unable to restrain himself. At first, a great minister hurried to the king's presence and said to the king, "O divine one, please do not grieve, that beloved son of yours, even if he has not yet been found, it will not be long before he is found, O divine one, please do not grieve." The king then continued on his way.

A minister of middle rank came to pay respects. The minister came before the king and, weeping, spoke thus to the king: "The two princes, though still alive, are completely tormented by the fire of sorrow. What has happened to the youngest prince? He has been seized by impermanence. A newly delivered, hungry tigress, seeing that the prince wished to give his body, the prince, that great sentient being, generated great compassion. In order to seek the unsurpassed path, in order to recite all of the many, he bound his mind to supreme enlightenment, like a sea that is exceedingly deep and vast. Having climbed to the peak of a high mountain, he abandoned his body before the hungry tigress. Because he was weak and unable to take it, the tigress bit through the prince's throat with her teeth. Because the prince gave his body, only his remains were left. At that time, the king and queen, upon hearing these words, fainted. Their minds sank into an ocean of sorrow, and they were utterly burned by the fire of affliction. The ministers sprinkled sandalwood water on the king and queen, and they immediately arose and wept loudly, raising their hands and beating their breasts. A junior minister came and spoke thus to the king: "I saw the two princes fainting in the garden. When I sprinkled cold water on them, they regained consciousness slightly. Looking in the four directions, it was as if a raging fire were spreading everywhere. They arose for a moment, but then fell again, unable to control their grief. Raising their hands, with words of affection, they praised the wonders of their younger brother." When the king heard these words, the fire of sorrow burned even more fiercely. The queen wept loudly and exclaimed: "My beloved son, whom I cherished above all others, has been devoured by the demon of impermanence. Now the two sons who remain are also burned by the fire of sorrow and tormented by affliction. I must now quickly go to the foot of the mountain, to protect the remaining life and to lift their spirits." Then, mounting their steeds, they quickly set out on the road, abandoning their bodies with single-minded devotion, and went to the rocky cave. The two princes were disheartened, beating their chests, and their behavior was deranged. On the road, they met people who were walking and weeping. The parents embraced them, uttering cries of sorrow, and immediately abandoning their bodies, they entered the mountains and forests. After the Bodhisattva abandoned his body and went into the forest, they gathered together.
