The Blessed One said to the Venerable Ananda, "Lay out a seat for me under this tree." Then, the Venerable Ananda, having heard the command, laid out the seat. Having laid it out, he said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, the seat is prepared, may the Noble One know the time." Then, the Blessed One sat on the seat in the lotus position, straightening his body, maintaining mindfulness, and abiding there, and said to the monks, "Do you wish to see the relics of the former body of the Bodhisattva who practiced austerities in the past?" The monks replied, "We wish to see them." The Blessed One received them and said to the monks: Look at the relics of the body left by this Bodhisattva who has endured hardships. After speaking, he said in verse: The Bodhisattva warrior, endowed with excellent wisdom, with great courage and diligence, has perfected the six perfections, constantly meditating, never ceasing for the sake of Bodhi, demonstrating great renunciation, with no weariness in his heart. Monks, all of you should respectfully prostrate to the relics of the Bodhisattva's former body! These relics are perfumed by the immeasurable fragrance of discipline, meditation, and wisdom, and are a supreme field of merit, so they are extremely difficult to encounter. Then the monks and many attendants, with one mind and respect, joined their palms and bowed their heads to the relics, praising: Such a thing has never happened before!
