Having attained the sacred fruit, he was overjoyed and content, and fully accepted it. The fifth chapter, "Purifying Karmic Obscurations," from the most supreme and victorious Sutra King, the Golden Light Sutra. The Golden Light Most Excellent King Sutra, Volume Four. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, named Lion's Unobstructed Light Flame, together with countless billions of retinues, arose from meditation, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, respectfully joined his palms, bowed his head to the feet of the Bhagavan, and offered flowers, incense, jeweled banners, streamers, and various kinds of umbrellas as offerings to the Bhagavan, and then spoke to the Bhagavan, saying: "Bhagavan, by what cause and condition does one attain the mind of Bodhi? What is called the mind of Bodhi?" "Bhagavan, as for what is Bodhi, the present mind cannot be pointed to, the future mind cannot be pointed to, and the past mind cannot be pointed to. Apart from Bodhi, the mind of Bodhi cannot be pointed to either. What is called Bodhi cannot be expressed in words, so the mind has no form, no characteristics, no substance or function, and is not something to be manifested. Beings cannot be pointed to, nor can they be comprehended. Bhagavan, how can one understand the meaning of this profound Dharma?" The Bhagavan said: "Son of good family, it is just so. It is just so, the substance and function of Bodhi are extremely vast, so they cannot be pointed to as something to be manifested, and apart from Bodhi, the mind of Bodhi cannot be pointed to either, so what is called Bodhi is inexpressible, and the mind is also inexpressible, without form or characteristics, without substance or function, and all beings cannot be pointed to either. Why is that? Because both Bodhi and mind are equal in suchness, and because the manifester and the manifested are equal. However, it is not that the dharmas cannot be known. Son of good family, Bo

That which a Bodhisattva Mahasattva knows in this way is called the clear exposition of the realization of all dharmas, enlightenment, and the mind of enlightenment. What is the mind of enlightenment? It is not past, not future, and not present. Likewise, the mind is the same. Sentient beings are also the same. In this, there are no two characteristics that can be truly fixated upon. Why is that? Because all dharmas are without arising. Enlightenment is also without object of focus, the name of enlightenment is also without object of focus. Sentient beings and the name of sentient beings are also without object of focus. Hearers and the name of hearers are also without object of focus. Solitary Buddhas and the name of solitary Buddhas are also without object of focus. Bodhisattvas and the name of Bodhisattvas are also without object of focus. Buddhas and the name of Buddhas are also without object of focus. Conduct and non-conduct are also without object of focus. The name of conduct and non-conduct are also without object of focus. Because it is without object of focus in this way, it abides well in all extremely solitary dharmas. This also arises dependent on the root of virtue of merit. Son of good family, just as the king of precious mountains benefits all mountains, so too this mind of enlightenment benefits sentient beings, therefore this is said to be the first cause of the perfection of generosity. Son of good family, just as the great earth holds all things, therefore this is said to be the second cause of the perfection of discipline. Just as a lion possesses great power and majesty, and goes alone without fear, so too, being free from fear and trembling, this is said to be the third cause of the perfection of patience. Just as the wheel of wind is powerful, strong, and swift, so too, without wavering in the mind, this is said to be the fourth cause of the perfection of diligence. Just as an immeasurable palace made of seven precious jewels, possessing four staircases, with extremely cool winds blowing through the four doors, is extremely comfortable.

Just as one experiences the joy of meditation, in order to fully seek the treasure of the Dharma of meditation and increase it, this is called the cause of the fifth Dhyana Paramita. For example, just as the orb of the sun increases its rays, so too, this mind quickly destroys the darkness of ignorance in samsara, therefore this is called the cause of the sixth Prajna Paramita. For example, just as a merchant fulfills the wishes in the minds of all, so too, this mind completely transcends the perilous path of samsara and obtains the jewel of qualities, therefore this is called the cause of the seventh skillful means and wisdom, the extraordinary Paramita. For example, just as the fully pure and exceedingly full moon is without dimness, so too, this mind makes all objects of experience completely pure and perfect, therefore this is called the cause of the eighth Pranidhana Paramita. For example, just as a great minister who has power over the army of a Chakravartin king acts as he wishes, so too, this mind makes the Buddha-field completely pure and exceedingly adorned, and extensively benefits beings with immeasurable qualities, therefore this is called the cause of the ninth Bala Paramita. For example, just as a Chakravartin king in the sky, so too, this mind is unimpeded in all objects of experience, obtains freedom in all places, and goes to the place of empowerment, therefore this is called the cause of the tenth Jnana Paramita. You should train in these ten causes with great diligence. Sons of good family, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas rely on five dharmas to perfect the Dana Paramita. What are the five? The power of faith, compassion, the mind without seeking to fulfill desires, completely gathering all sentient beings, and completely seeking the wisdom of omniscience. Sons of good family, this is the giving of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas.
