In sandy areas, seashores, and riverbanks, diligently collect large amounts of sand, carefully sifting it to ensure it is very clean and free of living organisms, before proceeding to draw. That place should also be cleansed with water free of living organisms, mixed with the five products of milk, washed with river water, or filled with soil from mountain ravines, using any soil that is free of living organisms. After filling it, it should be thoroughly compacted to make it even everywhere, and then any of the three types of mandalas can be drawn as desired. On four sandalwood stakes, recite the mantra of the Wrathful King seven times and then plant the stakes in the four directions. With a thread of five colors, recite the essence mantra of the Wrathful One seven times, and then wrap it around all four directions of the mandala. Similarly, in the central location, the interior should also be made into four corners. The mandala master residing in the center should recite his own root mantra of the deity one thousand and eight times. Forming the great mudra of the Five Buddha Crowns, protect companions and oneself with the root mantra, and while reciting the mantra, go outside the mandala, then circumambulate the mandala clockwise, facing east, and sit on a cushion of kusha grass. Remembering all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, surround and spread kusha grass around the four corners of the mandala. Outside of that, also remove the offerings that have been placed overnight. After that, the mandala master, having done the things that should be done beforehand, being skilled in the mantra of his own lineage, believing in the Great Vehicle for the sake of benefiting sentient beings, having fasted for a day, being accompanied by good friends, and understanding the activities of various treatises, finely prepares the fine powder of five colors, and places the powder that has been recited with the six-syllable mantra essence in the center of the mandala. Outside, also hang victory banners and flags, decorate with four canopies, fill with gatherings of water, trees, and fruits, beat large drums and clay drums, sound conch shells, celebrate, and make auspicious sounds. In the four corners, explain the Dharma to those who listen. In the four directions, recite the Mahayana sutras.

How to act in what place is as follows: The Bhagavati Mother Prajnaparamita should be recited in the south. The Samadhi of Noble Moonlight should be recited in the west. The Noble Tree Adorned should be recited in the north. The Noble Sutra of Golden Light should be recited in the east. If there are no scriptures, then those who know these four sutras should be urged to listen to the Dharma from the Dharma preachers. Then, the mandala master rises and recites the root mantra (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanized, Chinese literal meaning) on the fragrant white flowers mixed with sandalwood, camphor, and saffron, and then scatters the mandala all over. After scattering completely, he goes outside. Within seven days, two or three painters who consume desired foods, generate bodhicitta, and uphold the uposatha vows are allowed to enter. The topknot is tied with the root mantra (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanized, Chinese literal meaning). Then, take fine powders of five colors, very beautiful and pleasing, from gold, silver, copper, and various jewels. If kings who possess great wealth and Dharma are made to inquire, then merely seeing the mandala will definitely attain enlightenment. What need is there to mention the practice of mantra? After the supreme one of the Shakya clan passed away, where would there be such enjoyment for sentient beings with little merit? Therefore, this ritual should be taught. Manjushri, endowed with great light, seeing the poverty of beings, briefly taught this condensed mandala. Make five good colors of paint from very fine rice and bean flour. Paint with white, yellow, red, black, and green. The previously prepared paint powder is taken by the master himself. The great mudra of the five topknots is tied, and after reciting the root mantra (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanized, Chinese literal meaning), the mudra is sealed on the powder. The master, the supreme companion of practice, makes a stove outside the mandala in the southeast direction, with the कार्य karma seen in the ritual. The stove is two cubits wide and one cubit deep, and is shaped like a lotus stamen all around. The outside is also shaped like a lotus stamen, with wood from the palasha tree.
