Saying, "I am a Bodhisattva," if even one individual from among all beings generates the mind of unsurpassed enlightenment, it accomplishes the great purpose of benefiting and bringing happiness to all sentient beings. Why did this sinful hunter employ such means to kill the Bodhisattva? If I were to offer service, or rewards, or an elephant made of wool, or a horse, or the seven precious jewels, or clothing, or food, or wealth, or grain, would I then be in accord with that sinful one and become his friend? Thinking thus, he severed the life force of that hunter. Having thus severed the life force of that hunter, he took the lion's skin, went to that mountain, piled up sandalwood of ox-head, and burned the lion's skin and corpse. Having thus burned the lion's corpse, he collected the bones, built a stupa, and made offerings. The Blessed One then spoke to Ananda, saying: Sons of good family, at that time and in that era, the one called Lion Steadfast Intent was none other than I, Shakyamuni, myself. Therefore, a Bodhisattva, for the sake of relying on a virtuous spiritual friend, even at the cost of body and life, does not generate even a slight sinful thought. Why is that? It is for the sake of recognizing kindness and repaying kindness. And how is that? A Bodhisattva, by relying on a virtuous spiritual friend, will quickly attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Sons of good family, a Bodhisattva, constantly and diligently relying on a virtuous spiritual friend, strives to listen intently to the Buddha's teachings, even to a single word, or a single verse, or a single meaning, in order to subdue and diminish the afflictions of the three realms. Thus, when a Bodhisattva seeks the Buddha's scriptures with a single-pointed mind, being exceedingly endowed with the desire for Dharma, he does not spare even body and life, and even if it were burning iron, or harder than the earth, he walks and does not mind the harm. If a Bodhisattva does not spare body and life even for a few verses, what need is there to mention the twelve divisions of scripture? If he does not spare body and life even for a single verse, what more need be said?

What need is there to mention external disturbances? Hearing the Dharma makes body and mind very happy, and generates great faith, thereby attaining the correct view. Seeing the one who teaches the Dharma, one does not generate arrogance, just as when seeing one's parents. Listening to the Dharma for the sake of sentient beings is not for the sake of gain and fame, but to benefit and bring happiness to sentient beings, not for the sake of benefiting oneself. For the sake of the sacred Dharma, one is not afraid of kings, hunger and thirst, cold and heat, tigers and jackals, and so on, ferocious beasts, thieves, and enemies, and so on. First, subdue the afflictions of the senses, and then listen to the Dharma; one does not listen at an inappropriate time, but listens with one-pointed attention. To show respect for the Dharma, one respectfully serves the one who teaches the Dharma, which is called a Bodhisattva knowing and repaying kindness. So, how does a Bodhisattva listen to the Dharma with one-pointed attention? There are four ways to listen to the Dharma: with the right intention, with a one-pointed mind, with a mind for all times and places, and with a virtuous mind. This is called a Bodhisattva diligently seeking the twelve categories of scriptures. Why is that? Because remembering the heavy kindness of the Buddhas, in order to universally spread the sacred Dharma of all Buddhas, in order to generate and increase the sacred Dharma of all Buddhas, in order to make worldly people have faith in the Dharma of the Buddhas, in order to lead all sentient beings to attain unsurpassed Bodhi. Therefore, the Bodhisattva remembers the countless sentient beings in the ten directions. In order to repay the deep kindness of all Buddhas, the Bodhisattva diligently seeks the twelve categories of scriptures. The Bodhisattva diligently seeks the Dharma of the Buddhas in order to generate faith in all sentient beings, and thereby studies the treatises on the science of reasoning. Furthermore, one must understand all the faults of wrongdoing, destroy the evil views of non-Buddhists, understand the skillful means of taming sentient beings, and what the Thus-Gone One has spoken.
