The Tathagata, out of compassion, please grant me the medicine of Dharma, and also please heal the diseases of my mind. Then, the Tathagata said to that sick Bhikshu: The Tathagata thinks that your kindness to me is very profound, therefore the Tathagata will repay your kindness. At that time, that sick Bhikshu became very happy, and the Tathagata treated him with joy, delight, and praise. That sick Bhikshu obtained the fruit of Arhat, possessing the three kinds of knowledge, the six kinds of supernormal powers, and the eight kinds of liberation. Indra and all the other gods were puzzled and asked the Tathagata: For what reason did the Tathagata himself take a towel and wipe away all the wounds and blood on the body of the sick Bhikshu, and say that this Bhikshu has a very profound kindness to you? Please explain the meaning to us. The Buddha said to Indra and the many gods: Listen carefully and remember it well, and I will tell you these things. Indra, in the past, countless eons ago, there was an evil king who practiced unjust laws and plundered everything. At that time, that evil king summoned five hundred ministers and gathered them together in secret, secretly admonishing those ministers: Whoever violates the law, you have the right to punish them with penalties. Whatever wealth you obtain, you must share it with me. At that time, those five hundred people often whipped with bows and arrows, and those who obtained a lot of wealth were let go; those who had no wealth were harmed, even to the point of endangering their lives. At that time, a layman slightly violated the law and was brought before those five hundred people. When they were about to whip him with bows and arrows, they heard that the layman was a very kind person, so they did not inflict harm but released him. For this reason, that layman was also very happy. Kausika, it should be understood in this way, at that time, at that time, the five

That centurion was that sick Bhikshu. At that time, the one who became a layperson was myself now. Therefore, Bodhisattvas repay the kindness of countless eons ago, whether light or heavy, and they never forget it until they attain perfect and complete enlightenment. At that time, Indra, the lord of the gods, and many divine retinues were overjoyed, and forty-eight thousand divine retinues generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. After generating the mind of enlightenment, they played celestial music and then returned to their respective abodes. The Blessed One said to Ananda: "Sons or daughters of good families who know and repay kindness should diligently focus on these four things. What are the four? Relying on virtuous friends, listening to the Dharma with one-pointed mind, contemplating the meaning, and practicing as taught. Furthermore, one should abide in four Dharmas. What are the four? Abiding in the Dharma and not following the person; abiding in the meaning and not following the letter; abiding in wisdom and not following consciousness; abiding in the sutras of definitive meaning and not abiding in the sutras of interpretable meaning. If one diligently practices these eight Dharmas, it is called knowing kindness. Furthermore, if one possesses eight Dharmas, it is called repaying kindness. What are the eight? Namely, not being concerned with gain, benefit, disparagement, praise, fame, mockery, suffering, and happiness. Furthermore, diligently focusing on these four things is called knowing kindness, and it is also called repaying kindness. What are the four? Namely, due to cultivating loving-kindness, when seeing sinful beings, generating a mind of love and compassion; due to cultivating compassion, when seeing suffering beings, looking at them without weariness and not abandoning them; due to cultivating joy, when seeing teachers, lamas, parents, and those with qualities, generating a mind of joy; due to cultivating equanimity, when seeing beings who have become enemies, not generating hatred.
