Not generating the mind. At that time, Ananda, having folded his clothes, requested the Buddha, saying: "Venerable One, when the Tathagata initially generated the mind for enlightenment, how did he diligently engage in the four aspects of knowing kindness and repaying kindness?" The Venerable One said to Ananda: "In the past, beyond countless, immeasurable, and limitless eons, there appeared in the world a Buddha named Vipashyin Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Lokavidu, Anuttara-purusha-damya-sarathi, Shasta deva-manushyanam, Buddha, Bhagavan, who acted for the benefit of fortunate beings. After acting for the benefit of fortunate beings, he completely entered Nirvana, and the Dharma in the True Dharma and the Image Dharma also disappeared. In a place called Varanasi, people were happy and prosperous, the years were good, and the king ruled the country with righteous laws. In that place, there was a mountain called the Mountain of the Holy Ascetics. Five hundred Pratyekabuddhas always resided on that mountain. In addition, many ascetics with five supernormal powers also resided there. At that time, many deer and wild animals also lived on that mountain. There was a lion named Firm Intent, whose body hair was golden in color, possessing great power and majesty, whose roar would cause birds to fall to the ground and deer to flee. He roamed and wandered on that mountain, and upon encountering one who possessed the form and conduct of a Pratyekabuddha practitioner, he developed a very joyful mind towards him. Like every day, he approached him closely and constantly listened to the recitation of the Sutras and the exposition of the True Dharma. At that time, a great and cruel hunter saw the lion whose fur was golden in color and developed a very joyful mind, thinking: 'If I kill that golden lion, skin it, and offer it to the king, I will surely receive a great reward, and even for seven generations I will not be poor.' He also thought: 'This lion named Firm Intent'

Because I am the king of beasts, arrows cannot deceive me, and traps and nets are of no use to me. Now I should use such a method: like the lion, the king of beasts in the mountains, if I follow like a practitioner, I will also transform into the appearance of a practitioner, hide the bow and arrow under the Dharma robes, lower my eyes, walk slowly, and sit by a tree. When it sees me, it will surely come to me. If it comes to me, I will draw the bow fully and shoot a poisoned arrow, surely killing it. Thinking this way, he returned home and said: My family has lived by hunting for generations, and even if I heard that a beast had golden fur, let alone seeing it with my own eyes. Now, in order to kill it, I shaved my hair and beard, put on Dharma robes, and returned to that mountain, sitting by a tree. At that time, the lion, with firm faith, saw the monk and was very happy, leaping and approaching the monk, licking his feet. Then, the hunter shot an arrow at the lion. The poisoned arrow brought pain, and it cried out, grabbed, and leaped, thinking: This person is wearing the changed-color robes of a practitioner, which is the sacred banner of the Buddhas of the three times. If I harm him, that is not good. If I harm him, take his life, and destroy the sacred banner of the Buddhas, that is not good. Thinking this way, it did nothing, just sat there. Before long, the poison took effect, becoming even more painful and unbearable. It thought again: To eat or not to eat? If I harm him, the Buddhas and saints will condemn me. There is no difference between doing good and doing evil in the world. This person is an evil person, coming to kill me. If I do not endure him, then I am no different from that evil person. Whoever practices patience will be filled with love for all beings. Whoever does not endure will be filled with hatred for all beings, and that person will generate afflictions. If afflictions arise, then it will

It will be transformed into the cycle of evil destinies. If one is in the cycle of evil destinies, one will be born in a place without leisure. If one is born in a place without leisure, one will be separated from virtuous friends. If one is separated from virtuous friends, one will not hear the holy Dharma. If one does not hear the holy Dharma, one will be ensnared by the net of doubt. If one is ensnared by the net of doubt, one will be separated from the Unsurpassed, Perfectly Complete Enlightenment. Therefore, thinking, 'I will not generate sinful thoughts,' he spoke this verse: Though my body and life may perish, I will not generate unwholesome, sinful thoughts. Even if I am separated from life, I will not harm those who wear the ochre robe. Towards those who have gone forth, I will never generate evil thoughts. After speaking these verses, he passed away. The earth and sky shook six times. Wild animals and deer, terrified, fled in all directions. Rain fell without clouds, and the sun's light became invisible. At that time, the hunter took off his clothes, took his knife, skinned the hide, and went back home. Having gone back home, he presented it to the king. The king, seeing the hide, was greatly pleased and said to his ministers, 'Since I was born, I have never heard of an animal whose body's hide and fur are the color of gold. Now, seeing it with my own eyes, it is truly amazing, truly amazing!' Then he asked the hunter, 'By what means did you obtain such a hide?' Then the hunter said to the king, 'Great king, if you grant me freedom from fear, I will speak truthfully.' The king also proclaimed, 'It shall be granted as you wish,' and the hunter told him everything that had happened. The king, hearing those words, was overcome with great sorrow, like swallowing a burning iron ball that cannot be swallowed or spat out, and became very uncomfortable. He gathered all the great ministers, lesser kings, and many attendants, and proclaimed, 'May you all know this: I have previously heard from wise and intelligent men that if one is born in the animal realm and the color of the body's fur is like gold, one should not eat it.'
