Although the Lama has great power, he will not become a protector. For example, like King Ajatasatru, he had the sin of immediate retribution. It is reasonable to fall into the hell of immediate retribution, but by sincerely taking refuge in the Buddha with a pure mind, the sin of immediate retribution is purified. Among the beings who fall into the Black Rope Hell, experiencing the heaviest sins among humans, like experiencing the heaviest sins, all sins are purified by experiencing only seven days, so this is called the protective power of the Three Jewels. Question: Can Devadatta, who committed sins, not be a protector? The Sutra says that whoever takes refuge in the Buddha will not fall into the three lower realms. What does this mean? Answer: Although Devadatta took refuge in the Three Jewels and fell into the Hell of Immediate Retribution, the time he experienced suffering was short and slight. For example, if a person goes to a terrifying place such as a mountain, forest, or remote temple, if he remembers the Buddha, his fear and dread will be pacified by the Buddha's merits. Therefore, taking refuge in the Three Jewels will become a protector, which is not false. Question: To which of the Four Noble Truths do the Three Jewels belong? To which of the twenty-two faculties do they belong? To which of the eighteen realms do they belong? To which of the twelve sources do they belong? To which of the five aggregates do they belong? Answer: The Three Jewels belong to the Truth of Cessation among the Four Noble Truths, and are one part of the Truth of the Path. The faculty belongs to the faculty of making everything that is not understood understandable. The eighteen realms belong to the realm of mind, the realm of consciousness, and the realm of phenomena. The twelve sources belong to the source of mind and the source of phenomena. The five aggregates belong to the five uncontaminated aggregates. Among them, the Buddha Jewel is one part of the Truth of the Path among the Four Noble Truths. The Dharma Jewel belongs to the Truth of Cessation among the Four Noble Truths. The Sangha Jewel also belongs to the Four Noble Truths.

It is a part of the truth of the path. The Buddha Jewel is included in the omniscient faculty among the twenty-two faculties. The Dharma Jewel is the cessation truth, therefore it is unconditioned, and is not included by the faculties. The Sangha Jewel is included in the three uncontaminated faculties among the twenty-two faculties. The Buddha Jewel is included in a part of the mind element, the mind consciousness element, and the dharma element among the eighteen elements. It is included in a part of the mind source and the dharma source among the twelve sources. It is included in a part of the five uncontaminated aggregates among the five aggregates of appropriation. The Dharma Jewel is included in a part of the dharma element among the eighteen elements. It is included in a part of the dharma source among the twelve sources. The Dharma Jewel is not included in the five aggregates. The five aggregates are conditioned, because the Dharma is unconditioned. The Sangha Jewel is included in a part of the mind element, the mind consciousness element, and the dharma element among the eighteen elements. It is included in a part of the mind source and the dharma source among the twelve sources. It is included in a part of the five uncontaminated aggregates among the five aggregates. Questioner: When we say, "I take refuge in the Buddha," do we take refuge in Buddha Shakyamuni, or do we take refuge in the Buddhas of the three times? Answerer: We take refuge in the Buddhas of the three times. Why? Because the Dharmakaya of the Buddhas is of one accord. Taking refuge in one Buddha is taking refuge in all Buddhas, because there is no difference among the Buddhas. Furthermore, when we say, "I take refuge in the Buddhas of the three times," some of the gods say, "I am a close attendant of Buddha Kashyapa." Some say, "I am a close attendant of Buddha Vipashyi." Likewise, each of the seven Buddhas has someone who says, "I am a close attendant of such and such a Buddha."

English

I take refuge in one Buddha. It is appropriate to take refuge for all beings of the three times: past, present, and future. Others say that it should not be so. Why? For example, in the Sutra Questioned by Vaishravana's Son, it is said that King Vaishravana's son takes refuge in the Three Jewels, which is to take refuge in the Buddhas of the past, the future, and the present. If we connect this meaning, it is evident that we take refuge in the Buddhas of the three times. Questioner: If that is the case, what is the meaning of the gods saying individually, "I am a close attendant of such and such a Buddha"? Answerer: What is definitely certain in what the gods say? Some gods take refuge in one Buddha, and some take refuge in the Buddhas of the three times. In short, one should take refuge in one Buddha. Questioner: What is it that one takes refuge in that is called taking refuge in the Buddha? Answerer: Taking refuge is a verbal commitment, which is to take refuge in the qualities of the all-knowing, the unlearned. Questioner: Do we take refuge in the Form Body or the Dharma Body? Answerer: We take refuge in the Dharma Body, not the Form Body, because the Form is not the Buddha. Questioner: If the Form Body is not the Buddha, then why does drawing blood from the Buddha's body result in committing an action without interval (uninterrupted karma)? Answerer: The Form Body is the vessel of the Dharma Body, the abode of the Dharma Body. Therefore, harming the Form Body results in an action without interval, but not because the Form Body is the Buddha. Questioner: What is it that one takes refuge in that is called taking refuge in the Dharma? Answerer: Taking refuge is a verbal commitment, which is to take refuge in the ultimate of desire and non-desire, and in Nirvana, which is called taking refuge in the Dharma. Questioner: Do we take refuge in our own ultimate body or in the ultimate body of others? Answerer: We take refuge in our own ultimate body and in the ultimate body of others.
