Sixteen syllables are half a verse. Thirty-two syllables are called one verse, and thus there are eighty thousand. Furthermore, according to another view, depending on the length of the verse, forty-two syllables are one verse, and thus there are eighty thousand. Furthermore, according to another view, teaching the precepts in half-month intervals is called one collection (Vinaya Pitaka), and thus there are eighty thousand. Furthermore, according to another view, the sixty-six thousand verses spoken by the Buddha are called one collection (Sutra Pitaka), and thus there are eighty thousand. Furthermore, according to another view, the Buddha taught eighty thousand Dharma remedies as antidotes to eighty thousand afflictions, hence they are called eighty thousand Dharma doors. Please explain, why did the Buddha first speak the Vinaya Pitaka and not the Sutra Pitaka and Abhidharma? Because the Vinaya Pitaka is the most excellent and was established by the Buddha himself. For example, in the Sutra Pitaka, there are instances where close disciples taught the Dharma. For example, Indra, the lord of the gods, said: "I am the most excellent among those who give alms." Why? Because after giving alms, I became the lord of the gods, and my wishes are fulfilled. The Buddha also said: "Yes, that is so." Sometimes, the Buddha emanates as an emanation Buddha, and the emanation Buddha teaches the Dharma. But the Vinaya Pitaka is not like that; everything is spoken by the Buddha himself, therefore the Buddha spoke the Vinaya Pitaka first. Furthermore, according to another view, the Sutra Pitaka is spoken according to the place where one resides, but the Vinaya Pitaka is not like that. Wherever a fault occurs, the rule is not immediately established there, but is established outside the boundary, or if a fault occurs among laypeople, it is established in the Sangha, or if a fault occurs in one city, it is also established in the Sangha, or if a fault occurs in the five kinds of assemblies, it needs to be established among the monks and nuns, therefore the Buddha spoke the Vinaya Pitaka first. The so-called Vaishali, some places are named after the king, some places are named after the land, and some places are named after the city. This place (Vaishali) is named after the Naga.

was named. The place called Kalandaka's residence was named after the bird. The city is named after the owner of the city. The name Devasdatta was also given because his parents prayed to the gods and obtained a son, so he was named Devasdatta. The name Powerful Wealth refers to two types of wealth: the wealth of sentient beings and the wealth of non-sentient beings. Non-sentient beings refer to the treasury of gold, silver, and the seven precious jewels, as well as possessions, fields, and numerous houses. Sentient beings refer to male servants, female servants, working people, yaks, horses, cattle, sheep, and numerous villages under control, which is called wealth. Powerful means possessing power or possessing excellent qualities, and people revere and respect him, so he is called powerful. Taking refuge in the Three Jewels, receiving the three refuges. What is the nature of taking refuge in the Three Jewels? Some teachers say that taking refuge in the Three Jewels is a ritual, and rituals have no definition. When taking the three refuges, kneeling down and joining palms, verbally reciting the words of taking refuge in the Three Jewels is to show the ritual of body and speech. If one is single-minded, even if there is body and speech, there is no display of ritual, which is called no display of ritual. Alternatively, taking refuge in the Three Jewels is the nature of the three actions of body, speech, and mind. Alternatively, taking refuge in the Three Jewels is the virtue of the five aggregates. The five aggregates of sentient beings perform virtuous deeds, so they take refuge in the Three Jewels, and the Three Jewels are the place of refuge. Taking refuge means protection or help, for example, if a person commits a serious crime and flees to another country, seeking refuge from the king of that country, the king of that country says to him, if you want to be unafraid, do not leave my country and listen to my teachings, and I will protect you, just as he admonishes him, so it is with every ordinary person, because they are under the control of demons and have the faults of birth, death, and cyclic existence, so they turn to the Three Jewels,

One should take refuge. If one single-mindedly turns to the Three Jewels and takes refuge, and does not violate the teachings of the Buddha, then the sinful king of demons can do nothing. Previously, a pigeon, threatened by a hawk, fled to the shadow of Shariputra, but still felt fear and panic. Then, when it fled to the shadow of the Buddha, it had no fear and did not tremble. Even if the great ocean could move and change, that pigeon would not change. Therefore, the Buddha possesses great loving-kindness and great compassion, while Shariputra does not have great loving-kindness and compassion. The Buddha has no habitual tendencies, but Shariputra's habitual tendencies are not exhausted. The Buddha practices the conduct of a Bodhisattva for three countless eons, while Shariputra practices asceticism for sixty eons. Therefore, when the pigeon fled to the shadow of Shariputra, it still felt fear and terror, but when it fled to the shadow of the Buddha, it became fearless. Question: If taking refuge in the Three Jewels can purify sins and non-virtue and one will not become fearful, then why did someone like Devadatta, having taken refuge in the Three Jewels, having left home out of faith and even perfected the precepts, commit three inexpiable sins and consequently fall into the Avici hell as an inexpiable being? Answer: The act of protecting is to take refuge in what is worthy of refuge. Someone like Devadatta, having committed great non-virtuous sins and also being bound by karma that must inevitably be experienced, is therefore difficult to protect. Question: If the Buddha does not protect those who have committed great sins, then what need is there for the Buddha to protect those who have no sins? And how can it be said that the Three Jewels possess the ability to protect? Answer: Devadatta's taking refuge in the Three Jewels was not with a pure mind, and he did not complete the three refuges. He was always desiring gain, respect, and fame, and even envied the Buddha, saying that he was the one with all-knowing wisdom. Therefore, the Three Jewels
