The eight precepts of the branch of the earth are said to be like this, not nine. Question: If one takes the eight-branch precepts, to which of the seven assemblies does that person belong? Answer: Even if one has not taken the precepts for the duration of one's life, because one has the precepts for one day, one is also called a lay practitioner. Otherwise, one is called a lay practitioner because one has not taken the precepts for the duration of one's life. One is not called a lay practitioner because one has the precepts for one day, so it is also said in the Sutra that this is an intermediate being. Without stopping, one asks again: World Honored One, are there other individual liberation precepts besides the seven assemblies? Answer: Yes, it is the eight-branch precepts themselves. Combining this meaning, taking the eight-branch precepts is not included in the seven assemblies. The Dharma of taking the eight-branch precepts, because the words are interrupted to say that one does not kill living beings for one day, so it cannot be mixed with other precepts taken for the duration of one's life. Question: Can one take the eight-branch precepts for two days, three days, or ten days at once? Answer: Initially, the Buddha established the precepts for one day, so one cannot exceed this. If one can take them through ritual, then one must take them once a day. It is also permissible to take them for many days. The method of taking the eight-branch precepts for one day is that one must take them from another person. Then from whom does one take them? One must take them from any of the five assemblies. After taking the eight-branch precepts, if one beats sentient beings, then the precepts are not pure. If one does not beat on the day of taking the precepts, but vows to beat on the next day, then the precepts are also not pure. In short, no matter how many non-virtuous actions one does with body and speech, the precepts are not broken, but they are not pure. If body and speech are pure, but one generates thoughts of desire in the mind, or generates thoughts of harming with hatred, then they are also not pure. If the three doors of body, speech, and mind are pure, but one does not bring to mind the six recollections, then the precepts are also not pure.
