It is not necessary to do so. After taking the eight precepts, if one keeps the six recollections in mind, it is called pure morality. It is said in the sutras that the merit of a king of Jambudvipa, who possesses all the people in the realm of Jambudvipa, as well as all the gold, silver, and wealth within it, is not even one-sixteenth of the merit of pure eight precepts. Whoever takes the eight precepts, if they indulge in singing and dancing, or greedily eat delicious food, or play various games as they please, then the precepts they have taken, whether in the morning or afternoon, will not be effective. If one does not have the intention to take the precepts beforehand, and indulges in various activities, and then encounters a virtuous friend and takes the precepts, then one will receive the precepts at any time, whether in the morning or afternoon. If one encounters obstacles or hindrances while preparing to take the precepts, and is unable to do so freely, and then takes the precepts without obstacles or hindrances, then one will receive the precepts at any time, whether in the morning or afternoon. Question: If one takes the precepts to observe them during the day but not at night, will one receive the eight precepts? If one takes the precepts to observe them at night but not during the day, will one receive the eight precepts? Answer: One will not receive any of the precepts. Therefore, the Buddha initially established the precepts for one day and one night, which is a fixed standard and cannot be violated. Without stopping, he asked again: O Blessed One, if one does not receive the precepts in that way, then it is said in the sutras that a certain monk in a remote monastery saw some hungry ghosts suffering various kinds of pain, some enjoying themselves during the day and suffering at night, and some enjoying themselves at night and suffering during the day. Are those beings also suffering because in their previous lives as humans, they observed the precepts during the day and committed evil at night, or observed the precepts at night and committed evil during the day, leading to these inconsistent actions? Answer: Good.

It is also not right to rely solely on the causes and conditions of previous lives. Because saying this is not said in the Sutra Pitaka or Vinaya Pitaka, so it cannot be considered a true meaning. Furthermore, it is said that this was an emanation of the venerable Katyayana to subdue an Yaksha, not a true situation. If one has taken the eight precepts and wants to renounce them, it is not necessary to renounce them to the five assemblies. Just saying "I renounce the precepts" to one person is enough to renounce them. If we distinguish from the perspective of obtaining the Pratimoksha vows, only those belonging to the human realm among the five realms can obtain the vows, and the other realms cannot obtain the vows. For example, those belonging to the realm of the gods cannot obtain the vows because they are attached to and crave the enjoyment of happiness. For example, once a close attendant of the venerable Maudgalyayana fell ill, and the venerable Maudgalyayana went to the Thirty-three Heavens to consult the physician Jivaka. At that time, the sons of the gods were about to go to a pleasure garden of great joy, and they happened to land on the road where the venerable Maudgalyayana was walking. The sons of the gods did not even have time to glance at the venerable Maudgalyayana and left. They went directly to Jivaka, and from a distance, they just raised their hands to Maudgalyayana and drove away in their chariots. Then the venerable Maudgalyayana thought to himself: This Jivaka was my disciple when he was in the human realm, but now he is attached to the enjoyments of the gods and has forgotten his former memories. Thinking this, he used his miraculous power to bless Jivaka's chariot so that it could not move. Then Jivaka got out of the chariot and prostrated himself at the feet of the venerable Maudgalyayana, and Maudgalyayana spoke of many causes and conditions and various things. Jivaka said to Maudgalyayana: When I was in the human realm, I was a disciple of the venerable one, so I just raised my hand to greet you. Do other sons of the gods do that? Being born in the heavens is because one is attached to and craves the enjoyment of happiness, so one involuntarily becomes like that. Maudgalyayana said to Jivaka: If a disciple falls ill, what should be done for him?
