It is also said because the merits of keeping the precepts are of different sizes, but it is not that the precepts can be violated in this way. Magapa asked again: World Honored One, if one takes the five precepts for one day, or from two to ten days, will one obtain the precepts if one takes them in this way? The Buddha said: That is not allowed. The precepts established by the Buddha each have their own time and limit. That is, taking the five precepts must be taken continuously until the end of life. If you take the eight-branch precepts, you must take them for one day without interruption. Therefore, the previous one is not allowed. Taking the precepts through the four kinds of prayers and requests also has three kinds: superior, medium, and inferior. Among them, the five precepts are the inferior precepts, the ten precepts are the medium precepts, and the complete precepts are the superior precepts. The five precepts also have three kinds: superior, medium, and inferior. If one takes the precepts with a small and inferior mind, it is called the inferior precepts. If one takes the precepts with a medium mind, one will obtain the medium precepts. If one takes the precepts with a श्रेष्ठ mind, one will obtain the श्रेष्ठ precepts. The complete precepts also have three kinds: superior, medium, and inferior, as mentioned in the five precepts. If one takes the precepts with an inferior mind before, and then takes the ten precepts with a श्रेष्ठ or medium mind, then the previous five precepts will not increase or add, but the remaining five precepts between not eating out of time except for the five precepts will become the increased precepts, and the five precepts taken before will become inferior. If one takes the five precepts with an inferior mind before, and then takes the complete precepts with a श्रेष्ठ and medium mind, then the five precepts taken before will not increase or add, but all other precepts except for the previous five precepts, when taking the complete precepts, taking them with a श्रेष्ठ and increased mind, one will obtain the increased श्रेष्ठ precepts. Therefore, the Pratimoksha precepts will not be obtained twice. If divided in order, the five precepts are called inferior, the ten precepts are called medium, and the complete precepts are called श्रेष्ठ. If divided in terms of meaning, if one takes the five precepts with a श्रेष्ठ mind, then this precept is called श्रेष्ठ, if one takes them with a medium mind,

If one receives the ten precepts with a middling intention, it is called the middling precepts. If one receives the complete precepts with a lower intention, it is called the lower precepts. If combined with meaning, obtaining precepts from superior, middling, and inferior intentions is not the same, but it is not absolutely certain. If one requests a Khenpo to receive the ten precepts, even if the Khenpo does not appear in person when receiving the ten precepts, one can still obtain the ten precepts. If the Khenpo dies when receiving the ten precepts, and one knows or hears of the death, even if one has taken the precepts, one will not obtain them. If one does not know or has not heard of the death, one will obtain the precepts. Receiving precepts by means of supplication and four requests, if the Khenpo does not appear in person, even if one has taken the precepts, one will not obtain them, because the number of the Sangha is insufficient. If the number of the Sangha is sufficient, even without a Khenpo, one can receive the precepts. Without interruption, he asked again: "Venerable One, is it permissible to do business with the five precepts of a layperson?" The Buddha replied: "It is permissible to do business, but these five types of work should not be done. One should not do the business of trading livestock. If one has one's own livestock, it is permissible to sell them, but it is not permissible to sell them to butchers. It is not permissible to do the business of trading bows, arrows, and weapons. It is permissible to sell what one owns. It is not permissible to do the business of trading alcohol. If one owns it, it is permissible to sell it. Because many insects die, it is not permissible to squeeze oil from grain. The Indian law is the same. Even Gabusha, if there are no insects in the process of squeezing oil, there is no fault. It is also not permissible to make five kinds of large colored dyes, because many insects die. In other places such as Yoksha, making dyes causes many insects to die, so it is not allowed. In the land of Han, making indigo dye also causes many insects to die, so it belongs to the category of five kinds of dye making." Without interruption, he asked again: "Venerable One, if one observes the eight precepts for one day and one night, besides refraining from untimely food, there are nine, so how can it be said to be eight precepts?" The Buddha replied: "The so-called precepts are, according to the Dharma, refraining from untimely food, not eating food. This is a branch of the eight precepts, it is an auxiliary."
