The discipline of is present at all times. The Pratimoksha discipline can be obtained even from sentient and non-sentient beings. The discipline of meditation and the discipline without outflows are not obtained from all sentient beings. The Pratimoksha discipline is obtained through loving-kindness towards all sentient beings. The discipline of meditation and the discipline without outflows are not obtained through loving-kindness. The Pratimoksha discipline serves as the basis for upholding the Buddha's teachings, ensuring the presence of the sevenfold assembly in the world, and the continuous attainment of the fruits of the three vehicles. The discipline of meditation and the discipline without outflows are not like that, therefore they are the most excellent in the three realms. At the time of initially receiving the precepts, immediately after performing the four karmas of supplication and request, the discipline is perfected. The manifesting form of the discipline of the first moment of the initial mind is also called karma, and also called the path of karma. The manifesting form of the discipline arising from the subsequent moment of mind is called karma, but not the path of karma. Therefore, from the first moment of mind, the manifesting form of the discipline is completely perfected in intention. Because it possesses intention, it is called the path of karma of intention. The previous discipline serves as the cause, and the manifesting form of the remaining discipline is spontaneously accomplished. Therefore, it is called karma, but not the path of karma. The discipline of the first moment of mind is both with and without rituals. The discipline that arises gradually later is only without rituals, not with rituals. The discipline of the first moment of mind is also called discipline, also called virtuous conduct, also called subduing. The discipline that arises immediately afterwards also has the same meaning. Then, without interruption, he again asked the Bhagavan: Among the three times of past, present, and future, at which time is discipline obtained? The Buddha replied: Discipline is obtained by a single moment of mind in the present time. The past and the future are not Dharma.

Yes. Non-sentient beings cannot obtain vows. The present moment of mind is sentient, so it can obtain vows. Question: Can one obtain vows with a virtuous mind? With a non-virtuous mind? Or with an unspecified mind? Can one obtain vows without a mind? Answer: All can be obtained. First, with a virtuous mind, prostrate to the feet of the Sangha, take the Dharma robe and alms bowl, and pray to the Khenpo. Then, sit squatting, join the palms, and without interruption, perform the four actions of supplication and request, completing the vows with a virtuous mind, which is called obtaining vows with a virtuous mind. If one performs the ritual in this way, always possessing a virtuous mind, when performing the actions, performing the four actions of supplication and request, if non-virtuous thoughts such as desire and hatred arise, then although that sentient being possesses the form of the perceptible form of the vows, it is called obtaining vows with a non-virtuous mind. This is also obtaining vows through the power of the initial virtuous mind and virtuous actions, not obtaining it with a non-virtuous mind. Previously, one performed the ritual actions with a virtuous mind, and when performing the four actions of supplication and request, if one falls asleep, or is distracted, and the perceptible form of the vows arises from the distracted and scattered mind, it is called obtaining vows with an unspecified mind. Previously, one performed the ritual with a virtuous mind, and when performing the four actions of supplication and request, if one enters into the samadhi of cessation, then at that time, possessing the perceptible form of the vows, it is called obtaining vows from no mind. The unstopped one asked again: If a householder has not taken the five vows but has taken the ten novice vows, can he obtain vows? Answer: At one time, one can obtain both the lay vows and the novice vows. If one has not taken the five vows, nor the ten vows, but has taken the Bhikshu vows, then one can also obtain all three vows at one time. The unstopped one asked: Bhagavan, if one has taken the Bhikshu vows, at one time one can obtain three kinds of
