One will obtain land. Furthermore, obtaining precepts means that from all sentient beings, one obtains four precepts each. If these four precepts are divided separately, they become twelve precepts. From sentient beings refraining from killing, not stealing, not engaging in unchaste conduct, and not lying, the four faults that arise are also due to three causes and conditions. That is, they arise from desire, arise from hatred, and arise from ignorance. All sentient beings possess these twelve non-virtues. If one turns away from these non-virtues, one will obtain twelve forms of virtuous precepts. Obtaining from countless sentient beings is also the same. If hundreds of thousands or hundreds of millions of Arhats pass into Nirvana, if one initially obtains precepts from those Arhats, even if the Arhats pass into Nirvana, the precepts will not be lost. The precept of not drinking alcohol is that from the beginning to the end of this body, for all that is within the measure of the three thousand great thousand world systems, with each breath, one obtains the form of the precept. When initially taking the precept, one says, "I will not drink any alcohol." Even if all alcohol is exhausted, the precept always exists and will not be lost. Question: When initially taking the precept, if one takes the precept to abstain from sexual misconduct through the three doors with regard to all women, and later takes a wife, will this precept be lost? Answer: It will not be lost. Why? Initially, one obtains the precept to abstain from sexual misconduct with women, but this is my wife, so it is not sexual misconduct. Therefore, this precept will not be lost. Applying this meaning, everything is consistent. Obtaining precepts from the eight precepts, the ten precepts, sentient beings, and non-sentient beings is also the same. The two hundred and fifty precepts are also such that each sentient being obtains seven precepts each. If these are divided separately, they become twenty-one precepts. All sentient beings will generate the seven sins of body and speech. The arising of sin is also due to three kinds of causes and conditions.

It arises from desire, it arises from hatred, and it arises from ignorance. Thus, with three causes and conditions, seven sins arise. Thus, there are twenty-one non-virtuous sins. If one turns away from sin, it becomes morality. Just as one sentient being has twenty-one forms of perceptible matter in the aspect of morality, so it is with all sentient beings. If this meaning is combined, it is possible to obtain countless moralities at once. But it is not the case that they are lost all at once, or that they disappear all at once. The so-called loss of morality means that if the root of morality is lost, it will not increase further and further. If one gives up morality and then takes it up later, one will not obtain morality. For example, if the root of the eight-branch vows of one day and one night is lost, then later the eight vows, or the five vows, or the ten vows, or the complete vows, or the vows of meditation, or the vows without outflows, none of these vows can be taken. If the root of the five vows is lost, even if one takes the eight vows, or the ten vows, or the complete vows, or the vows of meditation, or the vows without outflows, one cannot obtain all of them. If, after the five vows are lost, one first gives up the five vows and then takes up the ten vows, this is not appropriate. If, after giving up the five vows, one can still take the five vows. Even if one takes the eight vows, or the ten vows, or the complete vows, or the vows of meditation, or the vows without outflows, one will not obtain any vows. If the root of the ten vows or the complete vows is lost, then increasing further and further, or giving up vows and taking up vows, is the same as what is said from the five vows. Question: Among the vows of meditation, the vows without outflows, and the vows of individual liberation, which of these three vows is the most excellent? Answer: The vows of meditation are the most excellent. Otherwise, the vows of individual liberation are also excellent. Why is that? If the Buddha descends into the world, this vow will exist. But the vows of meditation and without outflows
