(The prince) prostrated and prayed to his mother, asking her not to be displeased. Upon hearing these words, the mother fainted and lost her sense of direction. Like someone who has swallowed something that cannot be swallowed or vomited, she fearfully embraced the prince and fell to the ground. Then, cold water was splashed on her face, and after a long time, she regained consciousness and said to her mother: My father, the king, will not live long. Please quickly fulfill my wish so that my father can live. Then, Prince Kshanti (Patience) said to the ministers, the small kings, and the many attendants: I will now bid you farewell with prostrations. At that time, the great minister summoned a lowly executioner and broke the prince's bones, pulled out his legs, and gouged out the pupils of his eyes. Then, those ministers pounded and mixed those medicines and offered them to the king. The great king also ate those medicines, and his illness was cured. After the king recovered, he said to the ministers: Where did you find such good medicine that cured my illness and saved me from death? The ministers reported: This medicine was prepared by Prince Kshanti. It was not found or prepared by us. Upon hearing these words, the king was startled and fell down, the hairs on his body standing on end. He slowly asked the ministers: How is Prince Kshanti now? The ministers reported: Prince Kshanti is now outside healing his bodily wounds, and it is feared that he will not survive. Upon hearing these words, the king cried out loudly, saying, "Alas, alas," then threw his body on the ground, dust covering his body, and said: I am truly shameless, why did I eat my son's flesh as medicine? Saying this, he ran towards his son, but before he arrived, the prince had already passed away. The king, queen, ministers, and many attendants surrounded him. The mother also threw herself on the prince's corpse, crying and lamenting: What sins did I commit in the past that caused my son to suffer so much? It would be easy for my body to turn to dust, why did my son have to die? Thus she wailed. Then the father, the king

O, the minor kings piled up sandalwood from the head of a fragrant elephant, cremated the prince's body, collected the prince's bones, and built a stupa of seven precious jewels. At that time, the Bhagavan spoke thus to the Bodhisattva Maitreya: "Noble sons, know this. At that time, do not think that the great king of Varanasi was someone else. At that time, that king was my father, King Suddhodana. At that time, do not think that the queen was someone else, for at that time, that queen was my mother, the goddess Maya. At that time, that Prince Kshanti was me. Bodhisattvas, for the sake of serving their parents for immeasurable and countless eons, give away clothes, food, drink, dwellings, bedding, and even the flesh and blood and marrow of their bodies. By that cause and condition, they attain perfect enlightenment. This precious stupa that has emerged from the earth is because I offered my body, bones, and even my life for my parents in the past, and built and offered this stupa in this very place. Therefore, even though I have now attained perfect enlightenment, it still manifests and appears. At that time, many retinues of gods, nagas, yakshas, humans, and countless others, hearing these words, experienced a mixture of joy and sorrow. Everyone shed tears and, in unison, praised the Tathagata's hundreds of thousands of qualities, and at the same time generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Furthermore, countless hundreds of thousands of sentient beings generated the minds of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Others, countless beings, attained the fruits from entering the stream to the fruit of Arhatship. Furthermore, countless hundreds of thousands of billions of Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas will soon attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Therefore, the Tathagata is truly one who serves his parents. Furthermore,

The Bodhisattva knows the virtues of his parents and that the Tathagata's body is born from previous aspirations. In order to fulfill the Tathagata's aspirations, the mother did not want to be served, so she demonstrated the end of her life. At that time, all the many attendants unanimously praised the mother, the goddess of beauty, saying: Mother, goddess of beauty, it is very good that you have given birth to the Tathagata, the teacher of gods and humans, who is unparalleled in the world! Then, the son of the Gandharva, Dharma Garland, rose from his seat, bared one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, bowed with his palms together towards the Buddha, and said to the Blessed One: Mother, goddess of beauty, what merit did she perform, and by what cause and condition did she give birth to the Tathagata? The Blessed One said: Listen carefully and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. In the past, countless, immeasurable, and inconceivable eons ago, there was a Buddha named Vipashyin (Tibetan: རྣམ་པར་གཟིགས།), the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, unsurpassed charioteer who tames beings, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, the World Honored One, appeared in the world. The holy Dharma of that Buddha declined, and even the period of practicing the Dharma with Buddha images declined. At that time, in a place called Varanasi, there was a mountain called the Abode of the Noble Ones (Tibetan: འཕགས་པ་གནས།). Hundreds of thousands of Pratyekabuddhas lived on that mountain. Countless sages with five supernatural powers also lived on that mountain. Because so many noble ones and sages lived there, I named that mountain the Abode of the Noble Ones. On that mountain, one sage lived on the south side of the mountain. One sage lived on the north side of the mountain. Between the two sages lived a spring, and next to the spring was a good, flat stone. At that time, at one point, the sage who lived on the south side of the mountain washed his clothes and feet on that stone and then returned to his dwelling. Not long after, a doe came to the spring to drink water.
