If one offers a Bodhisattva, who desires the Dharma, mixtures such as juice of Shaka fruit, grape juice, and black sugar water, using such items for a period of seven to ninety days, then that Bodhisattva has no joy in the offering of those items. Why is that? Because the Bodhisattva, from countless eons, seeks the Dharma of the Buddha, has no mind of increase or decrease towards all sentient beings, possesses a mind of loving-kindness and compassion, and abides in a mind of equanimity. Therefore, at times he becomes a Chakravartin king, and constantly benefits sentient beings with the ten virtuous dharmas. Those sentient beings also rejoice and act according to the king's wishes, and when their lifespan ends, they possess the supreme enjoyment of the five desires in the worlds of gods and humans, and are born into great and noble families. As they think and wish, there is no hindrance to sleeping, rising, and walking. Wherever they go, they possess horses and vehicles to ride, and they play and enjoy themselves in gardens. They partake of excellent food and drink, and indulge in pleasures as they wish, but ultimately they rely on impermanence, and are afflicted by old age and disease, and die. The sons and daughters of the household are consumed by grief, crying out and weeping, some striking their heads, some tearing their own hair, shedding tears and falling to the ground. Then they place the body on a palanquin or chariot and take it to the cemetery. Even after carrying it there, the sons and daughters return home, consumed by grief, some fainting and falling to the ground, some becoming ill because of it, some losing their memory and going mad, some dying from the interruption of their lifespan. Even if they do this, there is no benefit to the living, and it is even more harmful to the dead. At that time, the Chakravartin king, together with his retinue, travels and wanders through the lands, and seeing sentient beings afflicted by sorrow, he generates a mind of compassion and speaks thus: "A king is one who rules over many beings by the power of the land, and in this way subdues beings with the ten virtuous paths."

Even if one has attained the five supreme and perfect fruits, if one is still not liberated from the fear of birth, old age, sickness, death, and impermanence, then even if I rule the country with righteous Dharma, it will be of no benefit. Since it is of no benefit to beings in this way, how can one be called a great Chakravartin king? How can one be called a father of great love? How can one be called a great king of medicine? How can one be called a great guiding teacher? Being called a great guiding teacher means guiding to the correct path and showing the path of Nirvana, enabling one to attain the unconditioned bliss. We are not worthy of our name and actions. For example, a person tormented by thirst and on the verge of death runs around in search of water. He encounters a dry well and feels great joy, thinking: Now my body can be revived from death. Why is that? If I don't find water, this life will soon be over. Now that I have encountered a good well, I will surely find cool, clean water, drink my fill, and be able to live. Thinking this, he hurries to the well. Arriving at the well, he takes off his clothes and hides them to one side, and then enters the well in search of water. Reaching the bottom of the well, there is no water, but only venomous snakes, mirages, scorpions, centipedes, frogs, toads, and so on, as well as rubble, wood, and tangled grass. At that time, the person who was exhausted by thirst, as he had initially hoped, did not find water, but was bitten by many venomous creatures. He tried to get out of the well, but the well was old and dilapidated, deep and wide. There was neither a ladder nor a rope inside, not even a tree to climb. He tried to jump up, but he was tired and weak and could not jump, and fell back to the bottom of the well, where he was devoured and sucked by venomous snakes and other creatures. Thus, until his life was not completely over, he said: If I had known earlier that there was no water in this well, I would not have dared to even look at it, let alone enter it.
