saying, "It is not a ghost eating, it is a Bodhisattva." If even one out of each individual being generates the mind of unsurpassed Bodhi, then they will perform the great deed of benefiting and bringing happiness to all sentient beings. Why did this sinful hunter use such a method to kill the Bodhisattva? If I were to give him service, or a reward, or a woolen elephant, or a horse, or the seven precious things, or clothes, or food, or wealth, or grain, or wealth like this, would I be in agreement with that sinful one and become his friend? Thinking this, he severed the life force of that hunter. Having severed the life force of that hunter in this way, he took the lion's skin, went to that mountain, piled up sandalwood of the ox-head, and burned the lion's skin and corpse. Having burned the lion's corpse in this way, he collected the bones, built a stupa, and made offerings. The Blessed One said to Ananda, "Sons of good family, at that time, at that moment, the one called Lion's Steadfast Intention was none other than I, Shakyamuni, myself. Therefore, a Bodhisattva, for the sake of relying on a virtuous friend, even if it means losing body and life, will not generate an easily arising sinful mind. Why is that? It is for the sake of knowing kindness and repaying kindness. And how is that? A Bodhisattva, by relying on a virtuous friend, will quickly attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Sons of good family, a Bodhisattva, in order to destroy and diminish the afflictions of the three realms, constantly and diligently relies on a virtuous friend, and makes great effort to listen to the Dharma of the Buddha, even if it is only a single word, or a single verse, or a single meaning. In this way, when a Bodhisattva seeks the Buddha's teachings with a single mind, because he has a very strong mind of wanting the Dharma, even if he does not care for his body and life, he will endure the red-hot iron, or trample the ground and go, without considering harm. If a Bodhisattva does not care for his body and life even for a few verses, what need is there to mention the twelve scriptures? Even for a single verse, he does not care for his body and life,

If you do not spare your body, what need to mention external disturbances? The meaning of hearing the Dharma can make body and mind extremely happy, and by generating extremely sincere faith, one will obtain the mind of true view. Seeing the Dharma teacher is like seeing one's parents, and one will not generate arrogance. Listening to the Dharma for the sake of sentient beings is not for the sake of gaining fame and fortune, but for the sake of benefiting and bringing happiness to sentient beings, not for one's own benefit. For the sake of the sacred Dharma, one is not afraid of kings, hunger and thirst, cold, heat, tigers, jackals, etc., as well as fierce beasts, thieves, and enemies. Having subdued the afflictions of the senses beforehand, one listens to the Dharma after that, not listening at an inappropriate time, but listening with one-pointed mind. To respect the Dharma, to respectfully serve the Dharma teacher is what is called a Bodhisattva knowing and repaying kindness. What is it that a Bodhisattva listens to the Dharma with one-pointed mind? There are these four ways of listening to the Dharma: with a righteous mind, a one-pointed mind, a mind for all times and places, and a virtuous mind. This is what is called a Bodhisattva diligently seeking the twelve divisions of scripture. Why is that? Because remembering the Buddha's kindness is profound, in order to make the sacred Dharma of all Buddhas universally spread, in order to make the sacred Dharma of all Buddhas grow and increase, in order to make worldly people have faith in the Buddha's Dharma, in order to make all sentient beings attain unsurpassed Bodhi. Therefore, the Bodhisattva remembers countless sentient beings in the ten directions. In order to repay the profound kindness of all Buddhas, the Bodhisattva diligently seeks the twelve divisions of scripture. The Bodhisattva diligently seeks the Dharma in order to make all sentient beings generate faith, and studies the treatises on the science of reasoning. Furthermore, in order to know all the faults of wrongdoing, in order to destroy the treatises of wrong views of non-Buddhists, in order to know the skillful means of taming sentient beings, and thus.
