Since I was not healed, the Tathagata, out of compassion, please grant me the medicine of Dharma and heal the disease of my mind. Then, the Tathagata said to that sick Bhikshu: The Tathagata considers your kindness to be very profound, therefore the Tathagata will repay your kindness. At that time, that sick Bhikshu became very happy, and the Tathagata treated him with joy, delight, and praise. That sick Bhikshu attained the fruit of Arhat, possessing the three knowledges, six supernormal powers, and eight liberations. Indra and all the other gods were puzzled and asked the Tathagata: For what reason did the Tathagata himself wipe and wash away all the wounds and blood on the body of the sick Bhikshu with a hand towel? Please explain and tell us the reason why you said that this Bhikshu has a very profound kindness to you. The Buddha said to Indra and the many gods: Listen carefully and keep it in mind, and I will tell you these things. Indra, in the past, countless eons ago, there was an evil king who acted unlawfully and plundered everything. At that time, that evil king summoned five hundred ministers and gathered them together in secret, secretly admonishing those ministers: Whoever violates the law, you can exercise the power to punish them. Whatever wealth you obtain, you must share it with me. At that time, those five hundred people always whipped and beat people. Those who obtained a lot of wealth were let go; those who had no wealth were harmed, even to the point of endangering their lives. At that time, a layman slightly violated the law and was brought before those five hundred people to be whipped. (The five hundred people) heard (others say) that this layman was a very kind person, so they did not inflict harm but released him. Because of this, that layman was also very happy. Kauśika, it should be understood in this way, at that time...

At that time, the group of five hundred was this sick monk. At that time, the one who became a layperson was now myself. Therefore, Bodhisattvas repay the kindness of countless eons ago, whether light or heavy, and they never forget it until they attain enlightenment. At that time, Indra, the lord of the gods, and many of the divine retinue were overjoyed, and forty-eight thousand of the divine retinue generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. After generating the mind of enlightenment, they played divine musical instruments and then returned to their respective abodes. The Blessed One said to Ananda: "Sons or daughters of good family who know gratitude and repay kindness should diligently attend to these four meanings. What are the four? Relying on virtuous friends, listening to the Dharma with a single mind, contemplating the meaning, and practicing as instructed. Furthermore, one should abide in four dharmas. What are the four? Abiding in the Dharma and not following after persons; abiding in the meaning and not following after letters; abiding in wisdom and not following after discriminating consciousness; abiding in the sutras of definitive meaning and not abiding in the sutras of provisional meaning. If one diligently attends to these eight dharmas, it is called knowing gratitude. Furthermore, possessing eight dharmas is called repaying kindness. What are the eight? They are: not looking to gain and profit, not looking to blame and praise, not looking to fame and infamy, not looking to suffering and happiness. Furthermore, diligently attending to these four things is called knowing gratitude and also called repaying kindness. What are the four? They are: due to cultivating loving-kindness, when seeing sinful beings, generating a mind of love and compassion; due to cultivating compassion, when seeing suffering beings, looking without weariness and not abandoning them; due to cultivating joy, when seeing teachers, lamas, parents, and those endowed with qualities, generating a mind of joy; due to cultivating equanimity, not...

It is not right to generate hatred upon seeing. At that time, Kungawo (Ananda) arranged his robes and said to the Buddha: "Venerable One, how did the Tathagata diligently treat the four essential aspects of knowing and repaying kindness when he first generated the mind of Bodhi?" The Venerable One said to Kungawo (Ananda): "In the past, beyond countless, immeasurable, and inconceivable eons, there was a Buddha named 'All-Seeing,' a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, Tamer of Beings, Supreme Guide, Teacher of Gods and Humans, who appeared in the world. He benefited those with fortune. After benefiting those with fortune, he entered Nirvana. The true Dharma and its image also disappeared. In a place called Varanasi, people were happy and prosperous, and the year was good. The king also ruled the country with just laws. In that place, there was a mountain called 'Righteous Ascetic Holy Mountain.' Five hundred Pratyekabuddhas always resided on that mountain. In addition, many righteous ascetics with five supernormal powers also resided there. At that time, many deer and wild animals also lived on that mountain. There was a lion named 'Firm Vow,' whose body hair was golden in color, with great power and splendor. When it roared, even birds would fall to the ground, and deer would flee. It roamed and wandered on that mountain, and encountered someone with the appearance and conduct of a Pratyekabuddha renunciant, and a very joyful mind arose in him. Like every day, he approached him closely and regularly heard him recite sutras and explain the true Dharma. At that time, a great hunter named Marongba (Fierce) saw the lion whose hair was golden in color, and his heart was filled with joy, thinking: 'If I kill that golden lion, skin it, and offer it to the king, I will surely receive a great reward, and even for seven generations I will not be poor.' He also thought: 'Lion Firm Vow'
