This one named "Firm" is the king of beasts, so arrows and bows cannot hit him. Traps and nets are also useless. Now I will devise such a method: This king of wild animals, the lion, follows like a practitioner, so I will also transform into the form of a practitioner. I will hide the bow and arrow under the Dharma robes, lower my eyes, walk slowly, and sit under a tree. As soon as it sees me, it will surely come to me without hesitation. If it comes to me, I will draw the bow fully and shoot the poisoned arrow, surely killing it. Thinking this, he returned home and said: My family has been hunters for generations, and I have never even heard of a beast with golden fur, let alone seen one. Now, in order to kill it, I will shave my hair and beard, put on Dharma robes, and return to that mountain again, sitting under a tree. At that time, the lion's vow, "Firm," saw the monk and was overjoyed, leaping and approaching the monk, licking his feet. Then, the hunter shot the arrow at the lion. The poisoned arrow caused suffering, and the lion cried out, scratching and leaping, thinking: This is wearing the changed-color robes of a practitioner, the holy banner of the Buddhas of the three times. If I harm him, that would be terrible. If I harm him, take his life, and destroy the holy banner of the Buddhas, that would be terrible. Thinking this, it did nothing but stayed there. Before long, the poison took effect, and the pain became even more unbearable. It thought again: Should I eat him? But then it thought: That won't do. If I harm him, the Buddhas and the holy ones will condemn me. There is no difference between doing good and doing evil in the world. This fellow is an evil person, coming to kill me. If I do not endure him, then what difference is there between me and that evil person? Whoever cultivates patience will develop love for all. Whoever does not endure will develop hatred for all, and therefore afflictions will arise, and afflictions will arise.

If so, one will fall into the cycle of rebirth as an animal. Being reborn as an animal, one will be born in a place without leisure. Being born in a place without leisure, one will be separated from virtuous friends. Being separated from virtuous friends, one will not hear the holy Dharma. Not hearing the holy Dharma, one will be ensnared by the net of doubt. Being ensnared by the net of doubt, one will be separated from the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment. Therefore, I will not generate sinful thoughts, thinking thus, he spoke this verse: Though my body and life may vanish, I will not generate unwholesome, sinful thoughts. Even if I lose my life, I will not harm those who wear the ochre robe. Towards those who have renounced the world, I will never generate evil thoughts. Having spoken these verses, he passed away. The earth and sky shook six times. Wild animals and beasts, terrified, fled in all directions. Rain fell without clouds, and the sun's light became invisible. At that time, the hunter took off his clothes, took his knife, skinned the hide, and returned home. Returning home, he presented it to the king. The king, seeing the hide, was overjoyed and said to his ministers: Since my birth, I have never heard of an animal whose body's fur is the color of gold. Now, seeing it with my own eyes, it is truly wondrous, truly wondrous! He then asked the hunter, "By what means did you obtain such a hide?" Then, the hunter said to the king: Great king, if you grant me the assurance of no fear, I will speak truthfully. The king also promised, "As you wish." The hunter then related the events as they had occurred. The king, hearing these words, was overcome with great sorrow, like swallowing a burning iron ball, unable to swallow it down or spit it out, he became very uncomfortable. He then gathered all the great ministers, lesser kings, and many attendants, and proclaimed: You should know that I have previously heard from wise and learned individuals that among those born in the animal realm, there are those whose body's fur is like gold.
