If one takes vows carelessly, it will not be considered as having received the precepts, whether it is in the morning or in the afternoon. If one did not have the intention to take vows beforehand, but after engaging in various careless actions, one meets a virtuous friend and takes vows, then one will receive the precepts at any time, whether it is in the morning or in the afternoon. If obstacles or hindrances arise when one is preparing to take vows, making it involuntary, and later one takes vows without obstacles or hindrances, then one will receive the precepts at any time, whether it is in the morning or in the afternoon. Question: If one takes the vow to observe the precepts during the day but not at night, will one receive the eight-fold precepts? If one takes the vow to observe the precepts at night but not during the day, will one receive the eight-fold precepts? Answer: One will not receive any precepts. Therefore, the Buddha initially established the precepts as being for one day and one night, and this is a fixed standard that cannot be violated. Without stopping, he asked again: World Honored One, if one does not receive the precepts in that way, then in the sutras, a monk named Ikshi, in a desolate monastery, saw some pretas experiencing various sufferings, some enjoying themselves during the day and suffering at night, and some enjoying themselves at night and suffering during the day. Therefore, are those beings also suffering because in their previous lives they observed the precepts during the day and committed evil deeds at night, or observed the precepts at night and committed evil deeds during the day, resulting in these inconsistent actions? Answer: One should not rely solely on the causes and conditions of previous lives. Furthermore, what is said in this way is not said in the sutras or vinaya, and therefore it cannot be regarded as a definite truth. Alternatively, it is said that this was an emanation of the noble Katyayana in order to tame Ikshi, and it is not the actual truth. If one has taken the eight-fold precepts and wants to renounce them, it is not necessary to renounce them to the five types of assemblies, but one can renounce the precepts by saying a single sentence, "I renounce the precepts," to another person. If one distinguishes from the perspective of obtaining the Pratimoksha vows, it belongs to the five paths.

Only those belonging to a certain lineage can obtain the law, while others cannot. For example, those belonging to the lineage of gods cannot obtain the law because they are attached to and crave the enjoyment of pleasure. For example, once, a close attendant of the venerable Maudgalyayana fell ill, and the venerable Maudgalyayana went to the Heaven of Thirty-Three (Trayastriṃśata) to consult the physician Jīvaka. At that time, the sons of the gods were about to descend to a pleasure garden of great joy, and they landed on the road where the venerable Maudgalyayana and others were staying. However, the sons of the gods did not even have the leisure to glance at the venerable Maudgalyayana before leaving. When he went directly to Jīvaka, Jīvaka merely raised his hand from a distance to Maudgalyayana and then drove away in his chariot. Then, the venerable Maudgalyayana thought to himself: This Jīvaka was my disciple when he was among humans, but now he is attached to the pleasures of the gods and has forgotten his former memories. Thinking this, he blessed Jīvaka's chariot with his miraculous power, making it unable to move. Then, Jīvaka got out of the chariot and prostrated at the feet of the venerable Maudgalyayana, and Maudgalyayana spoke of many causes and conditions. Jīvaka said to Maudgalyayana: When I was among humans, I was a disciple of the venerable one and merely raised my hand to greet you. Would other sons of the gods do that? Those born in the heavens, because they are attached to and crave pleasure, involuntarily become like that. Maudgalyayana said to Jīvaka: If a disciple falls ill, how should he be treated? Jīvaka said: For the time being, he should not eat food. Then, Maudgalyayana's son urged Indra, the lord of the gods: It is very difficult to encounter a Buddha who has descended into the world, so why not go to the Buddha from time to time to hear the sacred Dharma? Then, Indra, the lord of the gods, knowing the venerable Maudgalyayana's thoughts, sent a son of the gods. When he sent a son of the gods to summon him, he did not come even after being summoned three times. Even though that son of the gods had only one daughter of the gods and one musician, he was attached to and craved pleasure, and even though the command of the lord of the gods was strict, he could not bear to leave.
