It is the precept of eight branches. If it is in accordance with that meaning, then taking the eight-branched precept is limited to the seven assemblies. The Dharma of taking the eight-branched precept is limited to not killing living beings for one day and one night. Because that word has been cut off like that, it is not permissible to mix it with other precepts or with taking it for life. Question: Is it permissible to take the eight-branched precept all at once for two days, three days, or ten days? Answer: Initially, the Buddha established it as a precept for one day and one night, so it is not permissible to deviate from that. If one is able to take it with effort, then one must take it once for one day and one night. It is also permissible to take it for many days. The method for taking the eight-branched precept for one day and one night is that one must take it from another person. And from whom should one take it? One must take it from any of the five assemblies. After taking the eight-branched precept, if one strikes or harms sentient beings, then it is not a completely pure discipline. Even if one does not strike or harm on the day of taking the precept, but vows to strike or harm on the next day, it is still not a completely pure discipline. In short, no matter how much one does non-virtuous actions with body and speech, one does not break the precept, but it is not completely pure. If body and speech are completely pure, but the mind generates thoughts of desire, or generates thoughts of harming with hatred, then it is also not completely pure. If the three actions of body, speech, and mind are completely pure, but one does not keep the six recollections in mind, then that is not called a completely pure discipline. After taking the eight-branched precept, if one keeps the six recollections in mind, then it is called a completely pure discipline. In the Sutras, it says that the king of Jambudvipa, with the merit of possessing all the people belonging to the realm of Jambudvipa, and all the gold, silver, and wealth within it, cannot match even one-sixteenth of the merit of the completely pure eight-branched discipline. Whoever takes the eight-branched precept and carelessly indulges in music, or if sick, carelessly eats delicious food, and various kinds of games
