However, the precepts of meditation and the precepts without outflows are not like that. Therefore, in the three realms, they are the most supreme and excellent. Initially, when taking vows, immediately after performing the four actions of supplication and request, the precepts are perfected. The initial moment of mind, the first manifestation of the precepts, is also called karma, and also called the path of karma. The manifestation of precepts arising from the later moment of mind is called karma, but it is not the path of karma. Therefore, from the first moment of mind, the manifestation of precepts is completely intention, and because it possesses intention, it is called the path of karma of intention. The previous precepts act as the cause, and the remaining manifestations of precepts are naturally accomplished, therefore, that is called karma, but it is not the path of karma. The precepts of the first moment of mind are both with rituals and not without rituals. The precepts that arise gradually later are only without rituals, and not with rituals. The precepts of the first moment of mind are also called precepts, also called virtuous conduct, and also called discipline. The precepts that arise immediately afterward also have the same meaning. Then, without stopping, they again asked the Bhagavan: Among the three times of past, present, and future, at which time can one obtain precepts? The Buddha replied: One can obtain precepts with the present moment of mind. The past and future are Dharma, not sentient beings, so they cannot obtain precepts. The present moment of mind is a sentient being, so it can obtain precepts. Asked: Can one obtain precepts with a virtuous mind? Can one obtain them with a non-virtuous mind? Or can one obtain them with a neutral mind? Can one obtain precepts without mind? The Buddha replied: All can obtain them. First, with a virtuous mind, prostrate to the feet of the Sangha, then take the Dharma robes and bowl, and supplicate the Khenpo. Then, squat down, join the palms, and perform the four actions of supplication and request without interruption, perfecting the precepts with a virtuous mind, this is virtuous.

It is called obtaining precepts through the mind. If the ritual is performed in this order, one will always have a virtuous mind. When performing actions, especially the four actions of supplication and request, if unwholesome thoughts such as attachment and hatred arise, then although that sentient being possesses the form of perceptible matter of precepts, it is said to be obtaining precepts with an unwholesome mind. That is, the precepts are obtained through the power of the initial virtuous mind and virtuous actions, not through an unwholesome mind. Previously, having performed the ritual with a virtuous mind, if one falls asleep or becomes distracted while performing the four actions of supplication and request, and the form of perceptible matter of precepts arises from the distracted mind, it is called obtaining precepts with an unspecified mind. Previously, having performed the ritual with a virtuous mind, if one enters into the cessation of perception samadhi while performing the four actions of supplication and request, then at that time, possessing the form of perceptible matter of precepts, it is called obtaining precepts from a mindless state. The uninterrupted one further supplicates: If a householder, without having taken the five lay precepts, were to take the ten novice precepts, would he obtain precepts? The Buddha replied: At one time, both the lay precepts and the novice precepts are obtained. If one has not taken the five precepts, nor the ten precepts, but instead takes the full monastic precepts, then at one time, all three sets of precepts are obtained. The uninterrupted one supplicates: Blessed One, if by taking the full precepts, all three sets of precepts are obtained at one time, then is it still necessary to take the five precepts first, then the ten precepts, and later to take the full precepts? The Buddha replied: Although all three sets of precepts can be obtained at one time, those who have particular faith in the Buddha's teachings will undoubtedly take the five precepts first, and having tamed themselves, and having increased their faith and devotion, will then take the ten precepts. Having taken the ten precepts, and having further increased their roots of virtue, will then take the full precepts. In this way, one gradually obtains the taste of the Buddha's teachings, and one's faith becomes firm and unshakable. For example, the great ocean
