Or evil, or good, or sinful, or a mind that does not express itself, exists at all times. The undefiled and the discipline of meditation exist when one abides in meditation and when one is certain in the undefiled mind. It does not exist in all other states of mind. The Pratimoksha discipline exists only among humans. The undefiled and the discipline of meditation exist in both gods and humans. The Pratimoksha discipline exists only in the desire realm. The undefiled and the discipline of meditation exist completely in the desire realm and the form realm. The undefiled discipline and the Pratimoksha discipline exist only in the disciples of the Buddha, but the discipline of meditation also exists in the heretics. Question: Among the five precepts of a layperson, which are the sins by nature? Which are the prohibitive sins? Answer: Four are sins by nature. The precept of drinking alcohol is a prohibitive sin. Drinking alcohol is the place of carelessness and laziness, and it will become an accomplice to the four sins. Among the five precepts, drinking alcohol is the basis of carelessness, and it will also lead to the loss of the four precepts. For example, in the time of the Buddha's light protection, a layperson, because of drinking alcohol, coveted another's wife and also committed adultery. He also stole and killed another person's bird. When another person asked him, "Why are you doing this?" he said, "I didn't do it." In this way, because of drinking alcohol, all four precepts were lost at once. If one drinks alcohol, one will also commit the four heinous crimes, but only the division of the Sangha cannot be done. Although this is not caused by the karma of the previous life, one will experience madness and unremembered madness. After drinking alcohol, one will become mad and confused like a mad bull. If one is drunk with alcohol, then correct actions, such as meditation, reading scriptures, chanting, and the affairs of the Sangha, will be lost. Although it is not a sin by nature, it is similar to a sin by nature. Then, without interruption, he again asked the Blessed One in this way: Like the precepts of a layperson, can only sentient beings obtain precepts?

It is also possible to obtain (precepts) from non-sentient objects. However, can precepts be obtained from sentient beings who can be killed, stolen from, engaged in impure conduct with, and lied to? Or, can precepts be obtained from sentient beings who cannot be killed, have nothing to steal, cannot be engaged in impure conduct with, and cannot be lied to? The Buddha said: From sentient beings, four precepts can be obtained, but from non-sentient objects, the precept of not drinking alcohol can be obtained. Whether sentient beings can be killed or not, whether they can be engaged in impure conduct or not, whether they can be stolen from or not, whether they can be lied to or not, precepts can be obtained from all of these. Even from sentient beings in the Avici Hell, down to the realm below Neither Perception nor Non-Perception, belonging to the realm of the three-thousand great-thousand world system, up to the Tathagata, these four precepts can be obtained from all living beings. That is to say, when initially taking precepts, one must vow not to kill the lives of all beings, not to take anything not given, not to engage in impure conduct with all beings, and not to speak any lies. Because there is no limit or measure, it is not impossible to obtain precepts from all sentient beings. If the precept-giving ceremony is performed according to the ritual, in order to make them understand beforehand and generate trust, the Dharma should be explained, and all beings should be guided to generate loving-kindness and compassion. In this way, if special faith arises, one can obtain excellent precepts. Again, obtaining precepts means obtaining four precepts separately from all sentient beings. If the four precepts are separated, they become twelve precepts. From sentient beings, not killing, not stealing, not engaging in impure conduct, and not lying, these four opposite faults arise also due to three causes and conditions: that is, arising from desire, arising from hatred, and arising from ignorance. All sentient beings have these twelve non-virtues. If one turns away from these non-virtues, one can obtain twelve forms of revealing form of virtuous precepts.
