What does it mean that anyone who takes refuge in the Buddha will not fall into the three lower realms? The answer is: Devadatta took refuge in the Three Jewels, but he fell into the Avici hell, but the suffering he experienced was also slight, and there were times of rest. For example, if someone goes to a scary place like a mountain, forest, or remote temple, if he remembers the Buddha, then the merits of the Buddha can calm his fear and dread. Therefore, taking refuge in the Three Jewels can become a protector, which is not false. Please tell me: Which of the four noble truths do the Three Jewels contain? Which of the twenty-two faculties do they contain? Which of the eighteen realms do they contain? Which of the twelve sources do they contain? Which of the five aggregates do they contain? The answer is: The Three Jewels are contained in the cessation truth of the four noble truths, which is a part of the path truth. The faculties are contained in the faculty that makes everything unknown known. The eighteen realms are contained in the mind realm, the consciousness realm, and the dharma realm. The twelve sources are contained in the mind source and the dharma source. The five aggregates are contained in the five uncontaminated aggregates. Among them, the Buddha Jewel is a part of the path truth in the four noble truths. The Dharma Jewel is the cessation truth in the four noble truths. The Sangha Jewel is also a part of the path truth in the four noble truths. The Buddha Jewel is contained in the all-knowing faculty of the twenty-two faculties. The Dharma Jewel is the cessation truth, which is unconditioned, so it is not contained in the faculties. The Sangha Jewel is contained in the three uncontaminated faculties of the twenty-two faculties. The Buddha Jewel is contained in a part of the mind realm, the consciousness realm, and the dharma realm of the eighteen realms. The twelve sources are contained in a part of the mind source and the dharma source.

The five uncontaminated aggregates are included within one aspect of the five aggregates. The Dharma Jewel is included within one aspect of the Dharma element of the eighteen elements. The twelve sources are included within one aspect of the Dharma source. The Dharma Jewel is not included within the five aggregates, because the five aggregates are compounded, while the Dharma is uncompounded. The Sangha Jewel is included within one aspect of the mind element, the mind consciousness element, and the Dharma element of the eighteen elements. The twelve sources are included within one aspect of the mind source and the Dharma source. The five aggregates are included within one aspect of the five uncontaminated aggregates. Questioner: When we say, "I take refuge in the Buddha," do we take refuge in Shakyamuni Buddha, or do we take refuge in the Buddhas of the three times? Answerer: We take refuge in the Buddhas of the three times. Why? Because the Dharmakaya of the Buddhas is of one essence. Taking refuge in one Buddha is taking refuge in all Buddhas, because there is no difference among the Buddhas. Furthermore, when we say, "I take refuge in the Buddhas of the three times," some gods say, "I am a close attendant of Buddha Holding the Light." Some say, "I am a close attendant of Buddha Who Sees All." Likewise, for all seven Buddhas, they each say, "I am a close attendant of such and such a Buddha." Therefore, it is appropriate to take refuge in one Buddha, and not appropriate to take refuge in the three times. Others also say that it is not permissible. Why? For example, in the Sutra Questioned by Vaishravana's Son, it is said that King Vaishravana's Son takes refuge in the Three Jewels, which means taking refuge in the Buddhas who have passed away, who have not yet come, and who are now dwelling. Combining this meaning, it is evident that we take refuge in the Buddhas of the three times. Questioner: If that is the case, what is the meaning of the gods each saying, "I am a close attendant of such and such a Buddha?" Answerer: The gods...
