There are many villages that engage in trade, that is what is meant by being wealthy. 'Powerful' means possessing authority or having excellent qualities, people respect and revere, therefore it is called powerful. Taking refuge in the Three Jewels, receiving the three refuges. What is the nature of taking the three refuges? Some teachers say that taking the three refuges is a ritual, and rituals have no essence. When taking the three refuges, kneeling down and joining palms, verbally reciting the words of taking refuge in the Three Jewels, this demonstrates the ritual of body and speech. If one is single-mindedly focused, even if there is body and speech, but the ritual is not demonstrated, this is called not demonstrating the ritual. Another explanation is that taking the three refuges is the nature of the three actions of body, speech, and mind. Yet another explanation is that taking the three refuges is the virtue of the five aggregates, the virtue of the five aggregates of sentient beings causes them to take refuge in the three, the Three Jewels are the place of refuge. Taking refuge means protection or reliance, for example, if someone commits a serious crime and flees to another place, seeking refuge with a hostile king. The king of the hostile country says to him, 'If you want to be unafraid, do not leave my country, and if you listen to my teachings, I will protect you.' Just like that, ordinary people are also like this, controlled by demons, having the faults of birth and death in samsara, therefore one should turn to the Three Jewels and take refuge. If one single-mindedly turns to the Three Jewels and takes refuge, and does not violate the Buddha's teachings, then the sinful king of demons can do nothing. Previously, a pigeon was chased by a hawk and went under the shadow of Shariputra, but it was still afraid and frightened. Then, when it went under the shadow of the Buddha, it had no fear and did not tremble. Even if the great ocean could move and change, that pigeon could not be changed. Therefore, the Buddha possesses great love and great compassion, but Shariputra does not have great love and compassion.

. For the Buddha, there are no habitual tendencies, but for Shariputra, habitual tendencies are not exhausted. The Buddha practices the conduct of a Bodhisattva for three countless eons, while Shariputra practices asceticism for sixty eons. Therefore, even if a pigeon goes into the shadow of Shariputra, it will still feel fear and dread, but if it goes into the shadow of the Buddha, it will become fearless. Question: If taking refuge in the Three Jewels can purify sins and non-virtue and not be afraid, then why did someone like Devadatta take refuge in the Three Jewels, renounce from home with faith, and even perfect the discipline, but commit three inexpiable sins, and eventually fall into the Avici hell? Answer: Refuge should also be taken in someone who is worthy of refuge. Someone like Devadatta has committed great sins of non-virtue and is bound to experience the consequences, so it is difficult to be a refuge. Question: If the Buddha does not protect those who commit great sins, then what is the use of the Buddha protecting those who have no sins? How can we say that the Three Jewels have the power of protection? Answer: Devadatta's refuge in the Three Jewels was not with true faith, and he did not complete the three refuges. He always desired gain, respect, and fame, and even slandered the Buddha, saying, "I am the one with the wisdom of omniscience." Therefore, even though the Three Jewels have great power, they will not become his refuge. For example, King Ajatashatru also had inexpiable sins and should have fallen into the Avici hell, but with true faith and single-minded devotion, he took refuge in the Buddha, thereby purifying his inexpiable sins. He fell into the Black Rope Hell, where he experienced the heaviest sins in the human world, but after experiencing it for only seven days, all his sins were purified. This is the power of the protection of the Three Jewels. Question: From which sutra does the statement that Devadatta committed sins and should not be protected come from?
