He went before him, folded his palms, and merely prostrated. Then, the Blessed One spoke to Ananda in verse: Ananda, you should know. Whether it will become poor and miserable, or whether it will not become diminished in power and authority, is the nature of renunciation. In this way, the Blessed One instructed Ananda, praised him, and spoke many kinds of joyful Dharma, and Ananda was exceedingly joyful, delighted, and pleased. He arranged his robes and bowed his head at the feet of the noble Non-Regression, and immediately the earth shook in six ways. His body and mind became soft and workable, and he thoroughly attained his own purpose and accomplished his task. Then the Blessed One said to the noble Non-Regression: "Quickly roar the lion's roar! Like this: the Three Jewels, the Four Truths, the distinctions of the seven assemblies of householders and renunciates, and their three refuges, from the five lay vows to all the precepts, the precepts that benefit sentient beings, the precepts that purify afflictions, the precepts that tame through conduct, the precepts of meditation, and the precepts without outflows—teach these and make the lineage of the Three Jewels flourish!" Then Non-Regression said to the Blessed One: "If the Tathagata blesses me with the power of miracles, I will ask the Tathagata a little. What are the so-called 'Three Jewels'? If the so-called Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the Three Jewels, have no characteristics, then why do the Dharma and Sangha have differences and distinctions? How should one take refuge in the Three Jewels? If the three refuges are one, then it is unreasonable to say that they are three. If you say that there are three refuges, then why do you say that there are seven assemblies? Blessed One, what is it that one takes refuge in that is called refuge?" Then the Blessed One explained those meanings separately and said: "The so-called Buddha is feeling, because it is the feeling of the manifestation of all the characteristics of the Dharma. Furthermore, all sentient

Now, in the three realms, one is often deluded by sleep. The Buddha, with the eye of Bodhi, observes that he can perceive himself and enable others to perceive, so it is called perception. The Buddha is one who has obtained all means for all dharmas and has spoken of everything. I ask, how can it be said that the Buddha has spoken of everything? Is it said that he speaks according to the occasion before the time has passed? Or is it said that he speaks according to the different categories? The answer is: The Buddha speaks according to the occasion, and before the time has passed, he speaks of all dharmas. Later, when the close disciples gathered the Dharma treasury, they summarized it according to categories. Sometimes the Buddha said to the close disciples: The precepts have heavy and light, there are offenses and non-offenses, thus dividing the Vinaya Pitaka. Sometimes, based on the nature of cause and effect, due to the arising of afflictions and near afflictions, the nature of karma is explained, thus dividing the Abhidhamma Pitaka. For the world, including gods and humans, teaching and speaking according to their respective capacities is called emanating from one root, which is the action of karma spoken to those who have the capacity for taming. For sentient beings with sharp faculties, many profound meanings are spoken, which is called the intermediate treatise, which is the action of karma spoken to the disciples. Various kinds of meditation dharmas are spoken, which is called the miscellaneous treatise, which is the action of karma spoken to those who meditate. Long treatises are spoken to destroy many heretics. Question: If the Buddha abides in speaking everything, then in the sutras, the Buddha sits under a tree, grasps a leaf from a branch of the tree, and asks the close disciples: Are there more leaves on this branch that I am holding? Or are there more leaves on the big tree? The answer is that there are more leaves on the big tree. The Buddha also said: The Dharma that I know is like the leaves of a big tree, and the Dharma that I speak is like the leaves that I hold in my hand. Then, can it be said that the Buddha has spoken of everything? The answer is: All of everything with different natures and
