That insect smelled the odor of flesh and blood and stung that monk. Then that monk became disturbed and took off his clothes and threw them into the fire and burned them. At that time, that meditating monk was the Buddha Dipamkara. At that time, that insect was Devadatta himself. At that time, the one who became a louse is now me. If Devadatta harmed me for the sake of gain and respect, even though I have now attained perfect enlightenment, for the sake of gain and fame, drawing blood from the body of the Buddha, sentient beings will fall into the great hell. Devadatta always harmed the Tathagata with malice, and even after countless kalpas, it cannot be fully recounted. The Tathagata always protected with great compassion, with a loving and affectionate heart. I met Devadatta and quickly attained Buddhahood, and out of gratitude, he always protected me with compassion. At that time, the Tathagata said to Ananda: Go into the sentient being hell and ask Devadatta if you are tormented by suffering, and then come back. Then Ananda, according to the Buddha's command, went into the sentient being hell and went to the gate of hell, and said to the hell guard Awang: Call Devadatta. Awang said: Which Buddha's Devadatta do you want? All the Buddhas of the past also had a Devadatta. Then Awang said to Devadatta: Ananda is now waiting outside the door and needs to see you. Devadatta came there and said to Ananda: Have you come well? What did the Blessed One say to me? Now in this uninterrupted sentient being hell, the happiness is like a monk entering the third dhyana. The Blessed One said: The great Bodhisattva, for the benefit of sentient beings, with great skillful means, experiences countless great sufferings of the cycle of birth and death. And does not consider it harmful. If someone thinks that Devadatta is truly sinful and will fall into the uninterrupted sentient being hell, that is not the case.

At that time, upon hearing the Tathagata speak about Devadatta's conduct, this profoundly skillful means, from the assembly of many retinue members, countless hundreds of thousands of Bodhisattvas attained forbearance of the unoriginated dharma. Countless hundreds of thousands of gods and humans generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Countless hundreds of thousands of gods and humans attained the fruits ranging from entering the stream to the fruit of an Arhat. At that time, the gods of the intermediate space rained down divine flowers like rain from the sky above. They played divine musical instruments and illuminated everything with great rays of light, praising, "The Tathagata's teachings are truly wondrous and excellent!" After the Bhagavan spoke in this way, the many retinue members rejoiced, bowed their heads, and departed. In the Great Skillful Means Sutra for Repaying the Kindness of the Buddha, the chapter called "Evil Deeds" is the sixth. Seventh Chapter: The Chapter on Compassion. The Great Skillful Means Sutra for Repaying the Kindness of the Buddha. Volume Five. At that time, the many retinue members served, revered, and honored the Bhagavan. They made offerings, praised and extolled him. They circumambulated him and sat facing him. Then, the Tathagata, indulging in the immeasurable realm of profound subtlety, in order to liberate many beings from the unbearable suffering of the three realms, to eliminate the five obscurations, to untie all bonds and fetters, to enable all sentient beings to attain liberation, and to establish them in the unconditioned bliss, distinguished and revealed two fields of merit. What are the two? The field of merit of manifest action and the field of merit of non-manifest action. And what are they? They are parents, Khenpos, Lamas, Buddhas, Dharma, Sangha, and Bodhisattvas. If sentient beings make offerings and accumulate merit towards them, they will attain the fruit of the path. Then, the Bhagavan spoke to the chief of the wise, Shariputra, and the other great attendants, saying: "You should know, the Tathagata

He will soon pass into nirvana. Having heard these words from Shariputra, he felt uneasy as if his limbs were being pricked by needles, and overwhelmed by sorrow, he fell to the ground and fainted. After a long time, he was revived by sprinkling cold water on his face. He rose, folded his palms, and praised him with these verses: In the nectar of the Buddha's teachings, there is no weariness or boredom in listening. There is nothing that is dominated by laziness, or that is of no benefit. In the ocean of the five realms of samsara, it is like sinking into a muddy swamp. Because of being bound by craving and desire, the world revolves due to ignorance. In the past, he practiced the Dharma correctly, and because he gave alms equally, he was endowed with auspicious marks between his eyebrows, and his light was immeasurable. His eyes are like a crescent moon, seeing all the lands of the ten directions without exception. Seeing the mind's eye of all beings, he becomes extremely happy. At that time, Shariputra praised the Thus-Gone One with hundreds of thousands of verses, bowed his head at his feet, circumambulated him hundreds of thousands of times, and said to the gods, nagas, humans, and non-humans: O sons of good families, alas, the world is empty! Alas, alas, the world is empty! Woe, woe, the world is empty! The precious and sacred bridge of Dharma has collapsed! The supreme tree of enlightenment has been broken! The precious and sacred victory banner has fallen! The sun of the supreme Buddha has set in the mountain cave of the great nirvana! As he said this, all the many attendants were alarmed and terrified to the point that all the hairs on their bodies stood on end. The sun also lost its light and the mountains also collapsed. The great earth also shook violently. Then Shariputra spoke these verses to the many attendants: The body of the Buddha that I have seen is like a mountain of refined gold. All the marks and qualities have disappeared, and only the name remains. In order to emerge from the three realms, one should strive diligently. If one is to choose virtuous deeds, nirvana is the supreme bliss. Then, Shariputra, in order to please the many attendants, displayed miraculous powers.
