Between... there were five hundred merchants who constantly traveled back and forth. Because the road they traveled was very dangerous, one of the merchants had a white dog. At that time, a friend of that merchant cooked meat and left it there in the evening, and in the middle of the night, the dog stole and ate it. The next morning, the merchant friend wanted to eat the meat, but couldn't find it, and was very distressed. He became angry, took up a weapon, cut off the dog's four limbs, and threw it into Surakhung (place name). The dog was suffering greatly in Surakhung. Shariputra, in the first part of the night, observed everything with his divine eye and saw the suffering dog from afar. Then, the next day, in the morning, he put on his Dharma robes, took his alms bowl, begged for food from the city, and went to the dangerous road of Surakhung, where he offered the begged food to the dog. Then, he preached the Dharma of joy and happiness. The dog, hearing the Dharma, felt ashamed and unhappy. After seven days, it abandoned its sinful karma, was liberated, and was then reborn as a human. The Blessed One told Ananda: The white dog at that time is now the renunciate Venerable Tsunda. In the past, he was born into a lower realm because he spoke evil words to a noble being. Immediately he regretted and confessed, and a feeling of shame arose, and he prayed: May I meet a virtuous friend in the future. Having prayed in this way, he met a virtuous friend, purified his sinful karma, was reborn as a human, and met the Buddha, thereby exhausting his defilements. The Blessed One told Ananda: Remember the kindness of your parents and virtuous friends. Then, knowing how to repay kindness, strive to repay it. A virtuous friend is said to be the cause that brings about benefit. After the Blessed One taught in this way, at that time countless beings, from generating the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment to the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, generated the mind of enlightenment. The many attendants were very happy with the Buddha's teachings, prostrated, and departed. Commentary from the Sutra of the Great Skillful Means of Repaying the Kindness of the Buddha.

This is called the fifth chapter. The sixth chapter, the chapter on evil deeds. The Sutra of the Great Skillful Buddha Repaying Kindness, Volume Four. At that time, the Blessed One was surrounded by the fourfold assembly, who made offerings, served, revered, and praised him with words. At that time, the Tathagata smiled and emitted rays of blue, yellow, red, and white from his mouth, called Great Compassion, illuminating the ten directions of the world, from the peak of existence down to the eighteen great hells of sentient beings. The light also illuminated the body of Devadatta, causing Devadatta to be relieved of suffering and attain happiness. Then, all of the many attendants praised the Tathagata in unison, saying, "Well done! Well done! The Blessed One is endowed with great love and great compassion, and is truly impartial to enemies and friends. Although Devadatta constantly harms and opposes the Blessed One, the Blessed One still cherishes him with compassion, emits the light of great compassion, touches Devadatta's body, and liberates him from suffering." Then the Blessed One said to the many attendants, "This Devadatta not only harms me in this life, but also constantly harmed me in the past, but I have always done things that benefit and bring happiness to him through the power of love and compassion." Then Ananda, knowing the thoughts of the many attendants, arose from his seat to dispel the doubts of all, arranged his upper robe to one side, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms, and then said to the Blessed One, "Please show us what harm Devadatta did to the Blessed One in the past." The Blessed One said to Ananda, "Listen well, and I will explain it to you." The Blessed One said, "In the past, countless eons ago, in a country called Varanasi (ancient Indian place name, present-day Varanasi), there was a Buddha, the Blessed One, the Tathagata..."

That Bhagavan, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened One, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, unsurpassed tamer of beings, teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, appeared in the world and, for ten thousand years, worked for the benefit of sentient beings before passing into nirvana. After passing into nirvana, the sacred Dharma remained for twenty thousand years. When the Dharma of images also faded and disappeared, in a place called Varanasi, there was a king named Maharaza, who was naturally virtuous and possessed a wise mind. He ruled the country with the true Dharma, and the people were happy and prosperous. That king ruled over sixty border kingdoms and eight hundred great cities, and he also had five hundred elephants from Nepal. Although he had twenty thousand consorts, he had no sons. Therefore, the king regularly made offerings and prayed to the gods of the world, mountain gods, river gods, and tree gods. After twelve years, the great queen became pregnant, and the middle queen also became pregnant. The king was very happy and personally attended to them, providing soft and beautiful things in terms of service, respect, bedding, food, drink, and other necessities. He served them wholeheartedly. After attending to them in this way for ten months, the great queen gave birth to a son who was handsome and beautiful, adorned with excellent marks, and perfectly endowed with the marks of a great man. The middle queen also gave birth to a son, and the king was overjoyed. He gathered ministers, diviners, and Brahmins, showed them the two princes, and asked for their names. The diviners, in order to name the princes, asked what omens had appeared at the time of the princes' birth. The king said: The mother of the great prince, the great queen, was formerly naturally wrathful, jealous, and arrogant, but since conceiving the prince, her nature has become virtuous and gentle. She is always smiling and treats all beings with the same love and affection as her own child, smiling with a compassionate heart and speaking frankly. Then, the diviner also to the king
