, "english_translation": "He pleaded, "Protect [him] and please accept my son as a close attendant." Then the Bhagavan said, "Welcome." His hair fell out on its own, and the Dharma robes were on his body on their own. He praised, generated joy and happiness, and attained the fruit of the path. He became endowed with the three knowledges, the six supernormal powers, and the eight liberations. At that time, Ananda looked at the many attendants, and in order to dispel everyone's doubts, he rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, draped his upper robe over one shoulder, and with palms joined, he prostrated and said to the Bhagavan, "O ascetic Chunda, what merit did you perform in the past that you met the Bhagavan here and quickly attained the fruit?" The Bhagavan said to Ananda, "O ascetic Chunda, not only in this time, but also in the past, by performing excellent merit towards parents and the Sangha, he met a virtuous friend and attained the fruit of the path." Ananda requested, "Bhagavan, please show the substance of that." The Bhagavan said to Ananda, "Listen well. In the past, immeasurable eons ago, beyond countless eons, a Buddha Bhagavan named Vipashyin appeared in the world. Having done what was beneficial and happy for gods and humans, he passed into complete nirvana. After his nirvana, there was a young bhikshu who practiced the sacred Dharma, who was very skilled in the Matrika, the Sutras, and the Vinaya. He was beautiful and handsome in appearance, endowed with the marks of a human, confident in teaching the Dharma, and because his voice and words were pleasing, even kings and brahmins were friends with him and served and made offerings to him. At that time, there was an old bhikshu whose appearance was extremely ugly, who was not endowed with the marks of a human, whose voice was not pleasant, and who constantly praised the Three Jewels with words and sounds. At that time, that young bhikshu who possessed the three baskets said this to the old bhikshu whose voice was unpleasant, 'Such an unpleasant voice is like the sound of a barking dog.'

The old man said to the young monk, 'Don't you know me? You speak harsh words to me.' The monk, who possessed the three baskets (Tripitaka), said, 'I know you. You are the elder monk Mahala, who has renounced the world in the sacred Dharma of the Buddha. Why wouldn't I know you?' The monk Mahala said, 'Now the deeds are done. The pure conduct has been practiced. I will not take another existence.' Then, the young monk who possessed the three baskets, upon hearing these words, felt a chill and became alarmed. Then, the young monk lifted the monk Mahala with his right hand, and a great light emanated from his hand, illuminating the ten directions. Then, the young monk who possessed the three baskets bowed his head to the feet of the old monk and confessed, 'I am covered by the darkness of ignorance, and I did not know that you are a noble being. May this unknowingly committed sinful act not become an obstacle. May I meet virtuous friends in the future, and may I meet the noble teacher, you, and may I exhaust all defilements.' He confessed and admitted his fault in this way. The Blessed One said to Ananda, 'At that time, because that young monk who possessed the three baskets spoke one harsh word to the old monk, he was born as a dog for five hundred lifetimes.' After the Blessed One spoke these words, many in the assembly said, 'Alas! Alas! In this world, there is nothing more terrible than the karma of speech.' All the assembly made a vow in verses, saying, 'Even if a hot iron wheel constantly spins on the top of my head, I will not consider it suffering, and I will never speak evil words. Even if a hot iron wheel constantly spins on the top of my head, I will not consider it suffering, and I will not speak evil words to noble beings.' The Blessed One said, 'Shariputra has become a virtuous friend to many sentient beings. Day and night, six times, he observes the beings of the five realms with his divine eye, and when the time for taming them arrives, he does what benefits them.' At that time, in the land of Magadha and these two places.
