There was a fence, and the mother had her daughter guard the fence. "Daughter, I will go find food, and whatever I find, I will bring back and eat with you." Always searching for food in this way, one day she was late, and time had passed. The daughter, being hungry and thirsty, became angry and thought, "What could have happened to my mother that she hasn't given me food until now, making me so hungry and thirsty?" She angrily said, "My mother is not even as good as an animal. Even animals, such as beasts of prey, deer, and birds, remember their offspring's hunger and thirst and come to feed them in due time." Not long after she said this, the mother came carrying food. As they were about to eat, a Pratyekabuddha, in the form of a renunciate, was traveling through the sky from the south to the north. The daughter saw him and developed a joyful mind towards the monk. She stood up from her seat, joined her palms, bowed her head, and invited him. She spread out a clean mat, offered excellent flowers, and shared a portion of the food, offering it to the monk. The monk performed the act of eating and then taught the sacred Dharma, making her joyful and happy. Therefore, the daughter made this aspiration: "May I in the future meet noble beings and be able to serve, make offerings, and pay homage to them. May I have an excellent and beautiful appearance, be great and powerful, and may lotuses spring forth from under my feet as I walk, and also as I lift my feet." The Bhagavan said to Ananda: "At that time, that daughter was the queen Consort Deer Mother. In this way, by offering a single alms to the Pratyekabuddha and offering excellent flowers, she was great and powerful for five hundred lifetimes, possessing clothes and food as she wished, and lotuses sprang forth from under her feet. By the power of her aspiration, she now also meets five hundred Pratyekabuddhas, making offerings, serving, and paying homage to them. At that time, she was ungrateful and said one evil word, comparing her mother to an animal. Due to the evil karma of that evil speech, she was born in the womb of a deer for five hundred lifetimes." The Bhagavan said to Ananda: "All faults that arise in the world come from one's own mouth."

One should guard the karma of speech. The karma of speech is worse than being burned by fire, for being burned by fire only lasts for one lifetime. The fire of unwholesome speech karma burns for countless lifetimes. Fire only burns worldly possessions. The fire of unwholesome speech burns the seven noble riches. Therefore, Kungawo (Ananda), all the faults of sentient beings come from the mouth, and the mouth and tongue are said to be the sharp weapons that cut the body. When the Bhagavan said this, thousands of laymen and laywomen, by guarding their karma, attained the first fruit. Countless gods and humans generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment, up to the mind of a solitary buddha. All the many attendants were overjoyed by what the Bhagavan said, paid homage, and departed. At that time, the Bhagavan and Ananda, after begging for alms in Rajagriha (王舍城), returned, and outside the city there was a deep pit. The people of Rajagriha dumped all their excrement, urine, and unclean things into that pit. When it rained, the rainwater also flowed there. At that time, in the dirty water of the pit, there was a worm, shaped like a human, with many arms and legs, who saw the Tathagata coming from afar, raised its head from the water, looked at the Tathagata, and tears flowed from its eyes. When the Bhagavan saw this, he felt compassion and became displeased, and returned to Vulture Peak Mountain. Then, Ananda spread the Tathagata's seat, and the Tathagata sat in the lotus position. Then, Ananda looked at all the attendants, understood their thoughts with his mind, and said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, just now there was a worm in the dirty water, what karma did it do in the past that it was born in the dirty water? How long has it been born there? When will it be liberated from there? The Bhagavan said to Ananda and the many attendants: Listen carefully. I will explain it to you in detail.
