become. Therefore, generating the mind of enlightenment is called the root. It is also called a limb. It is also called a collection. It is also called a sequence. It is also called a seed. The Bodhisattva's generation of the mind of enlightenment is also ultimate and non-ultimate. That which leads to the attainment of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment is ultimate because it never turns back or diminishes. The non-ultimate will regress and decay. There are two types of regression: ultimate regression and non-ultimate regression. Ultimate regression refers to the inability to practice or diligently cultivate the Dharma of non-regression after generating the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Non-ultimate regression refers to practicing and diligently cultivating any Dharma after generating the mind of enlightenment. There are four types of Bodhisattva conduct: Whether it is a son of a noble family or a daughter of a noble family, if they hear or see the inconceivable qualities of the Buddha or Bodhisattva, they will develop faith and aspiration, thinking: The qualities of the Buddha and Bodhisattva are inconceivable. The Buddha and the inconceivable qualities of the Bodhisattva are to be attained, therefore I should attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Therefore, with one-pointed mind, remember enlightenment and generate the mind of enlightenment. Some, although they have not seen the inconceivable qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, merely hearing the essence spoken by the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas with their understanding, will develop faith and aspiration. Having developed faith, in order to attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment and omniscience, they generate the mind of enlightenment. Some have neither seen the inconceivable qualities of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, nor heard the Dharma spoken with their understanding, but if they see that the sacred Dharma is about to decline, they will think: The unsurpassed Buddha Dharma is the afflictions of sentient beings.

Which pacifies without remainder, and becomes a matter of happiness and benefit, only the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas can make it abide for a long time and not decline. Now I also generate the mind of Bodhi, and in order to completely abandon the afflictions of all sentient beings, even if my body experiences great suffering, I will make the Buddha's Dharma abide in the world for a long time. Thinking thus, I generate the mind of Bodhi. Some, even if they have not seen the decline of the Buddha's Dharma, but seeing the sentient beings of the evil age with extremely heavy afflictions, such as desire, hatred, ignorance, as well as shamelessness, lack of shame, stinginess, jealousy, anger, strife, disbelief, doubt, laziness, and so on, they will think: Now is an extremely evil time, these sentient beings do not practice virtue, and in such an evil time, even the mind of the two vehicles cannot be generated, let alone generating the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment? Thinking thus, they generate the mind of Bodhi. Having thus generated the mind of Bodhi, they should also strive to make all sentient beings generate the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. After that, the Bodhisattva King of Joy said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, the Bodhisattva's gratitude is that I generate the mind of Bodhi. The Bodhisattva's repayment of kindness is to cause other sentient beings to generate the mind of Bodhi. Thus, how did the Thus-Gone One generate the mind of Bodhi in the past cycles of existence? The Blessed One said: Son of good family, in the past countless eons of cycles of birth and death, I have suffered the eight great hot hells due to the great afflictive karma of body, speech, and mind. Namely: the hell of sentient beings Aha, the hell of sentient beings Alala, the hell of sentient beings Atstsa, the hell of sentient beings boiling copper pot, the hell of sentient beings great boiling copper pot, the hell of sentient beings black stone, the great black stone
