When the consorts heard this, they fell to the ground, beating their chests and stamping their feet, crying and wailing, and fainted. After a long time, they regained consciousness. They said, "Great King, you are the one who cherishes your body the most in the world, and you take great care to heal it for fear of injury. Why do you harm and damage your body? Great King, you are a wise man, are you drunk now? Or are you possessed by a ghost? What is wrong?" The king said, "It is nothing like that." "Then why do you do such harm and want to make offerings to the Brahmins?" The king said, "I desire the Dharma of the Buddha and want to benefit all sentient beings." "If you really think of all sentient beings, then why do you abandon us?" The king said, "All the love and affection in the world will eventually separate. Therefore, I want to use my body as an offering, to light the great lamp of wisdom in the dark room for you and all sentient beings, to illuminate the darkness of ignorance in the cycle of birth and death, to cut off all the entangling afflictions, to liberate you from the suffering of samsara, and to place you in the state of nirvana. That is what I think, so do not hinder or create obstacles!" At that time, the consorts, hearing such instruction, were as if choked, unable to say a word, and then cried loudly, tearing their hair, and said, "We have no merit, it is really inauspicious, we have lost our refuge while still alive!" Hearing this proclamation, although sad and reluctant to separate, they still begged to grant us one request. If our bodies and lives are to be offered to the king, please use them to make offerings to that teacher Brahmin. The king said: Children, you are still young and not strong enough to make such offerings. I have sought out the teacher from a distant place and promised to make offerings, and I cannot go against my will. If a filial son does not go against his father's will, would you go against my will? Hearing these words, the princes cried loudly, and the sound of wailing frightened the gods of the country, and everyone fell to the ground like a collapsing mountain. At that time, all the kings of the border states also paid their respects to the king and then went to the place where the great teacher was in the palace. Walking up to him, they took off all their ornaments, took off their clothes, put them aside, and then sat upright. As soon as he sat down, he announced to the small kings, ministers, five hundred princes, and twenty thousand concubines: Who among you can cut a thousand wounds on my body? The concubines, princes, ministers, and subjects of the small countries said in unison: Even if we cut our own bodies with knives and gouge out our own eyes, we would not dare to make wounds on the body of the supreme king. After that, the king became unhappy and said: Now I look like a madman.

在如此众多的民众中，难道就没有人能成为我的朋友吗？当时，那位国王召来了一个天生就凶残暴戾、令人恐惧的恶种屠夫。那个屠夫来到了。屠夫来后对王子们说：你们不要悲伤。我有办法让伟大的国王无法成功。如果不能成功，就照旧继承王位罢了。王子们听到这些话，心中生起了极大的欢喜。然后，那个屠夫来到国王面前禀告说：伟大的国王，现在您打算做什么呢？国王说：我打算在身上点燃一千盏灯，供养伟大的婆罗门导师。屠夫说：如果那样，就可以在您的身体上切割了。国王听到这些话，心中生起了极大的欢喜，对屠夫说：你真是我证得无上菩提的真正朋友啊。然后，屠夫站在国王面前，用呜咽哭泣的大声对国王禀告说：国王您知道吗？按照杀人的规矩，必须先砍头，然后砍断脖子，再将手脚分离，还要取出肠子和肌腱。伟大的国王，您能忍受那样的痛苦吗？国王听到这些话，心中生起了极大的欢喜。然后，屠夫拿着一把像牛舌一样的刀，没过多久，就在国王的身上割了一千个伤口。屠夫本以为国王会因此而动摇，但国王的心却没有动摇，于是屠夫把刀扔在地上逃走了。然后，人们在伟大的国王身上割开的一千个伤口里灌满了酥油，插入了上好的棉芯，点燃了一千盏灯。当时，婆罗门大导师看到这种情况，心想：现在如果不赶快说法，身体和生命是否能保住都很难说。如果生命保不住，谁来听法呢？于是他对国王这样说道：想要听闻佛法的人，要以极其勇敢的精进，行持难行之行。

The princes, hearing these words, felt great joy in their hearts. Then, the butcher came before the king and reported: Great king, what do you intend to do now? The king said: I intend to light a thousand lamps on my body and offer them to the great Brahmin teacher. The butcher said: If so, then it is possible to cut into your body. The king, hearing these words, felt great joy in his heart and said to the butcher: You are truly my true friend in attaining unsurpassed enlightenment. Then, the butcher stood before the king, weeping and wailing loudly, and reported to the king: Does the king know? According to the rules of killing, one must first cut off the head, then sever the neck, and also separate the hands and feet, and also take out the intestines and tendons. Great king, can you endure such suffering of pain? The king, hearing these words, felt great joy in his heart. Then, the butcher took a knife like a cow's tongue, and before long, he cut a thousand wounds all over the king's body. The butcher thought that the king would waver because of this, but the king's mind did not waver, so the butcher threw the knife on the ground and fled. Then, people filled the thousand wounds cut on the great king's body with ghee, inserted the essence of fine cotton, and lit a thousand lamps. At that time, the great Brahmin teacher, seeing this situation, thought: Now, if I do not quickly teach the Dharma, it is difficult to say whether the body and life can be preserved. If life cannot be preserved, who will listen to the Dharma? So he said to the king: Those who wish to hear the Buddha's Dharma must, with extremely courageous diligence, practice difficult practices.
