Furthermore, regarding the causes of enjoyment, be it clothes, wealth, food, edibles, drinks, jewels, bracelets, bodily ornaments, gold, silver, lapis lazuli, coral, realgar, conch shells, pearls, amber, or precious jewels. Or cattle, horses, vehicles, slaves, servants, wives, all are available. Or wells, bathing ponds, or fine precious ornaments. Although there are various kinds of things to enjoy, that Bodhisattva has no arrogance or pride. In this way, he is also skilled in all arts. He also possesses hundreds of thousands of treasure houses. He also has cattle, horses, and vehicles. There are also countless beautiful young women. He also has fine ornaments. Wells and bathing ponds, and so on, whatever desired enjoyments there are. However, he is not attached to these, but always delights in having few desires and being content, and is fond of dwelling peacefully in meditation in remote monasteries, mountains, gardens, and under trees. Although he speaks and talks with many people, his mind is always engaged in the door of antidotes (to afflictions). Although he acts in accordance with the behavior of ordinary people, he gives away precious jewels for the benefit of sentient beings, and does not do anything that harms or is not beneficial to sentient beings. If those who are poor, destitute, and miserable come to beg from the Bodhisattva, the Bodhisattva gives them whatever they desire. If any sentient being has faith and devotion in the Buddha's teachings, and in order to serve and make offerings to the Bodhisattva, performs services and attends to him, or does the work of washing feet, or does the work of washing and massaging the body, or does the work of sweeping and dusting, or prepares toothbrushes and bathwater, or spreads out bedding and shakes out bedclothes, or lights lamps in the evening and morning, or (offers) young servants, or offers food at noon, such as thanapana, pushena, and khadane, or (offers) drinks, such as yulishi, and the juice of bulashaka fruits, and grape juice, and black sugar water, and so on, Using such items, from seven days to ninety days, if they offer to the Bodhisattva for the sake of desiring the Dharma, then the Bo-

At that time, that Bodhisattva did not have a joyful mind towards offering the implements of offering. Why is that? Because the Bodhisattva has been seeking the Dharma of the Buddha for countless eons, without a mind of stinginess towards all sentient beings, possessing a mind of loving-kindness and compassion, and abiding in a mind of equanimity. Therefore, at times he acts as a Chakravartin king, constantly accomplishing the benefit of sentient beings through the ten virtuous Dharmas. Those sentient beings also rejoice and act according to the king's wishes, and even when their lifespan ends, they possess the supreme and perfect enjoyment of the five desires in the world of gods and humans, and are born into great and noble families. They can lie down, rise, and walk as they please, without any hindrance. Wherever they go, they are equipped with horses and vehicles to ride, and they play and enjoy themselves in gardens and groves. They enjoy supreme food and drink and indulge in pleasures, but ultimately they rely on impermanence, and when they are afflicted by old age and sickness and die, the sons and daughters of the family are tormented by grief, crying out and wailing, some striking their heads with their hands, some tearing out their own hair, shedding tears and falling to the ground. Then, they place the body on a coffin or chariot and send it to the cemetery. Even after sending it away like that, the sons and daughters return home and are still tormented by grief, some fainting and falling to the ground, some becoming ill because of it, some losing their memory and going mad, some dying from the interruption of their lifespan. Even doing this, there is no benefit for the living, and it is even more harmful for the dead. At that time, at that moment, the Chakravartin king, together with his retinue, traveled and wandered through the lands, and upon seeing sentient beings tormented by grief, he gave rise to a compassionate heart and said this: The so-called king is one who rules over many beings by virtue of the power of the land. Like this, even if one subdues beings through the path of the ten virtues, and ultimately obtains the supreme and perfect result of the five desires, if one has not been liberated from the fear of birth, old age, sickness, death, and impermanence, then even if I rule the country with righteous Dharma, there is no benefit.
