I say that those are as before. Monks, some ascetics and brahmins speculate on the past extreme, abandoning gods and humans, and those who abandon gods and humans, ask questions and transmit words, just like this, concerning these four bases. Ascetics and brahmins with wisdom, relying on what, dwelling where, and abiding in what place, thereby speculate on the past extreme, abandoning gods and humans, and those who abandon gods and humans, ask questions and transmit words, just like this, concerning these four bases. Here, some ascetics and brahmins do not truly know what is unwholesome, as well as wholesome, suffering, origin, cessation, and the path. They think thus: I do not truly know what is unwholesome, as well as wholesome, suffering, origin, cessation, and the path. Some ascetics and brahmins, who do not truly know what is unwholesome, as well as wholesome, suffering, origin, cessation, and the path, if they ask me questions about what is unwholesome, as well as questions about wholesome, suffering, origin, cessation, and the path, if I answer the questions they ask about what is unwholesome, as well as questions about wholesome, suffering, origin, cessation, and the path, then I would become a liar, therefore, those ascetics and brahmins, because they fear lying, because they fear and dread lying, because they completely condemn lying, therefore they abide in that basis, that continent, that protector, that refuge, that place of reliance. Those who abandon gods and humans ask questions and transmit words, relying on what, dwelling where, and abiding in what place, thereby speculate on the past extreme, abandoning gods and humans, and those who abandon gods and humans, ask questions and transmit words, this is the first basis. The second basis is, ascetics and brahmins with wisdom, relying on what, dwelling where, and abiding in what place, etc., are as before. Here, some ascetics and brahmins

Among them, the phrases "knowing unwholesome things as they are" and so on, are the same as before. That is my lie, and whatever is my lie, that is my wrong view. In this way, the wise monks and Brahmins are afraid of wrong views, terrified of wrong views, and completely despise wrong views, and abide on that basis, which is the same as before. From "relying on what, abiding in what, and dwelling on what" to "entrusting the wind of speech," this is the second basis. The third is, what do the wise monks and Brahmins rely on, abide in, and dwell on? The phrases "thinking about the past edge" and so on, are the same as before. Here, some monks and Brahmins do not truly know unwholesome things, as well as wholesome things, and so on, which is the same as before. That is my lie, and whatever is my lie, that is my wrong view, and whatever is my wrong view, that is my non-knowing. In this way, that monk and Brahmin are afraid of non-knowing, terrified of non-knowing, and completely despise non-knowing, and abide on that basis and that continent, from there to entrusting the wind of speech, this is the third basis, which is the same as before. The fourth is, what do the wise monks and Brahmins rely on, abide in, and so on, which is the same as before. Here, some monks and Brahmins are naturally dull and foolish. They think like this: If someone comes to me, thinking there is a next life, and then asks me, "Is there a next life?" I should tell him, "There is a next life." Is there no next life? Is there both a next life and no next life? Is there neither a next life nor a non-next life? Is that world like this? Or not? Is it another form? Or not? Is it not? Or not? Is it not like this? Or not? Is that next life not like this? Or not? Is it not like this? Or not? If asked like this, I would say there is no next life.

Or not. It should be prophesied thus, not thus or not thus. Those ascetics and Brahmins, fearing ignorance, terrified by ignorance, and thereby completely disparaging ignorance, they abide in that basis, that continent, that protector, that refuge, and that resort. Abandoning gods and humans, asking questions and transmitting words, this is the fourth basis. 'Relying on what, abiding in what,' etc., are as before. Ascetics and Brahmins contemplate the limits of the past, abandoning gods and humans, asking questions and transmitting words, all of these are based on these four foundations. Not more, not less, the Tathagata fully knows them as they truly are. Even more fully knows them as they truly are. Therefore, those who have gone into views, holding on to them in this way and cherishing them in this way, are as before. Monks, some ascetics and Brahmins contemplate the limits of the past, and all that those who have gone into views related to the limits of the past proclaim and speak of are these eighteen cases of having gone into views. Not more, not less, up to knowing even more, is as before. Monks, those dharmas that seem deeper than others are as before. Monks, which dharmas seem deeper than others? Are as before. Monks, some ascetics and Brahmins contemplate the limits of the future and speak of sentient beings, and some proclaim and declare that from then on I am not a sentient being, this is like the sixteen bases. Those wise ascetics and Brahmins, relying on what, abiding in what, depending on what, contemplate the limits of the future and speak of sentient beings, and some proclaim and declare that from then on I am not a sentient being? This is like the sixteen bases. Monks, some ascetics and Brahmins see and speak thus, from then on I am a sentient being with form, from then on I am not a being with form, both with form and not with
