The Brahma Net Sutra. The Brahma Net Sutra. In Indian language: Brahmajāla Sūtra. In Tibetan: The Brahma Net Sutra. Homage to the Three Jewels! Thus I have heard, at one time, the Blessed One was traveling in the country of Magadha with a great community of monks, namely one thousand two hundred and fifty monks, one thousand lay devotees, and five hundred female mendicants, and at night they stayed in the King's residence in the Light Grove between Rajagriha and Kalama Village, together with the community of monks. At that time, the wandering ascetic Rabga, in various ways, spoke unfavorably of the Buddha, and also spoke unfavorably of the Dharma and the Sangha. The disciple of the wandering ascetic Rabga, a Brahmin's son named Brahma-datta, however, in various ways, praised the Buddha, and also praised the Dharma and the Sangha. Thus, the teacher and the disciple, disagreeing with each other in terms of views, beliefs, distinctions, and tolerance, followed behind the community of monks and the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha. Then, many monks gathered and stayed in Rajagriha. They said: Venerable ones, the inclinations of sentient beings are various, for example, the wandering ascetic Rabga, in various ways, spoke unfavorably of the Buddha, and also spoke unfavorably of the Dharma and the Sangha. The disciple of the wandering ascetic Rabga, a Brahmin's son named Brahma-datta, however, in various ways, praised the Buddha, and also praised the Dharma and the Sangha. Thus, the teacher and the disciple, disagreeing with each other in terms of views, beliefs, distinctions, and tolerance, followed behind the community of monks and the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, this is truly very wonderful! They were properly discussing such topics of the time. Then, many monks gathered and stayed in Rajagriha, and the topic they were discussing was timely, the Blessed One.

Then, the Blessed One, dwelling in his daytime abode, heard with his divine ear, purified and surpassing human hearing, of this matter. Having heard, he arose from that concentration and went to the place where the king was. Having arrived, he sat down on the seat laid out before the community of monks. Having sat down, he addressed the monks, saying: "Monks, what is the topic of conversation that has arisen among you, with many monks gathered and seated in the king's residence? What is the conversation that you are now gathered and seated for?" "Venerable one, when we, many monks, had gathered in this residence of the king, the wanderer Rābhaga disparaged the Buddha in many ways, and also disparaged the Dharma and the Sangha. And the disciple of the wanderer Rābhaga, the Brahmin's son named Brahma-datta, praised the Buddha in many ways, and also praised the Dharma and the Sangha. Thus, the teacher and the disciple speak disagreeably with each other in terms of views, beliefs, distinctions, and tolerance, and they are attending upon the community of monks and the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Awakened One. This is most wonderful! We were discussing such topics. Venerable one, we, many monks, gathered in the king's residence, and that is the topic that has arisen, and we are gathered for that topic." "Monks, do not harbor resentment, intolerance, ill will, or displeasure towards those who disparage me, the Dharma, and the Sangha. Monks, if those who have life harbor resentment, intolerance, ill will, and displeasure towards those who disparage me, the Dharma, and the Sangha, then that will only become an obstacle for you. Why is that? Monks, if someone is momentarily angry, agitated, and displeased, it is impossible for him to fully know or see all aspects of the meaning of what others are saying.

. Therefore, monks, if someone speaks unfavorably of me, or speaks unfavorably of the Dharma and the Sangha, then what is true should be acknowledged as true, and what is not true should be pointed out as not true. One should answer, 'This is not true, it is not so, this is not present in our Dharma.' Monks, if someone praises me, and also praises the Dharma and the Sangha, one should not be pleased, nor should one be delighted, nor should one be conceited. Monks, if someone praises me, and also praises the Dharma and the Sangha, if one becomes pleased, delighted, or conceited, then that will only become an obstacle for you. Monks, why is that? Monks, if one is temporarily pleased, delighted, and conceited, then it is impossible for one to fully understand or see all the forms of the meaning of what others say. Therefore, monks, if someone praises me, and also praises the Dharma and the Sangha, then what is true should be acknowledged as true, and what is not true should be pointed out as not true. One should answer, 'This is not true, it is not so, this is not present in our Dharma.' Monks, those unlearned ordinary people will speak and tell of the Tathagata's slight praise, saying, 'It is only morality, and it is completely separated from desires.' How is it only morality? Gautama is one who has increasing morality, and he does as he speaks, and he speaks as he does. Gautama is like this, having abandoned killing, he abstains from killing, and he is full of compassion and shame for all living beings, having abandoned sticks and weapons, he has abandoned killing even for creatures as small as ants. Gautama is like this, having abandoned taking what is not given, he abstains from taking what is not given, he does not take what is not given, and he is delighted with what is given, and so on extensively.
