Furthermore, those dharmas that appear profound and profound, completely pure and completely purified, I have declared after realizing complete enlightenment with my own direct knowledge. Others also praise and extol the Tathagata truthfully as he is. Monks, which dharmas appear profound and profound, completely pure and completely purified, that I have declared after realizing complete enlightenment with my own direct knowledge, and that others also praise and extol the Tathagata truthfully as he is? Monks, some ascetics and Brahmins assert permanence, they speculate on the past extreme, and openly declare and state, "The self and the world are permanent," and this is based on four grounds. Ascetics and Brahmins, these wise proponents of permanence, relying on what, abiding in what, and based on what, do they speculate on the past extreme, and openly declare and state, "The self and the world are permanent"? This is based on four grounds. Monks, here some ascetics and Brahmins, whether dwelling in a secluded place, or under a tree, or in an empty house, through the cause of diligence, the cause of abandonment, the cause of meditation, the cause of repeated practice, and the cause of proper attention, attain such a samadhi of mental tranquility. When the mind is thus established in equanimity, they correctly remember twenty cycles of formation and destruction. They think thus: Therefore, the self and the world are permanent. Therefore, I think thus: Whether I dwell in a secluded place, or under a tree, or in an empty house, I shall attain such a samadhi of mental tranquility through the cause of diligence, the cause of abandonment, the cause of meditation, the cause of repeated practice, and the cause of proper attention. When the mind is thus established in equanimity, they correctly remember twenty cycles of formation and destruction. Therefore, the self and the world are permanent, unchanging, and without alteration.

It is like that which is immutable, abiding steadfastly like an iron tree. Thus, these sentient beings, endowed with knowledge, wander and revolve everywhere, unlike that which is eternal. Upon what do those who speak of permanence rely, where do they abide, and upon what basis do they speculate on the past extremity, and openly declare and assert, "The self and the world are eternal"? This is the first basis. The second is, upon what do those intelligent contemplatives and Brahmins who speak of permanence rely, where do they abide, and upon what basis do they speculate on the past extremity, and openly declare and assert, "The self and the world are eternal"? Monks, here, those intelligent contemplatives and Brahmins who speak of permanence, whether dwelling in a secluded place, or at the foot of a tree, or in an empty room, through the cause of diligence, the cause of abandonment, the cause of meditation, the cause of repeated practice, and the cause of proper attention, attain such a samadhi of peaceful mind. Having thus established their minds in equanimity, they accurately recall forty cycles of destruction and formation. They think to themselves, "Therefore, the self and the world are eternal." Therefore, I think to myself, whether I dwell in a secluded place, or at the foot of a tree, or in an empty room... up to, upon what do those who speak of permanence rely, where do they abide, and upon what basis do they speculate on the past extremity, and openly declare and assert, "The self and the world are eternal"? This is the second basis. The rest is as before. The third is, upon what do those intelligent contemplatives and Brahmins who speak of permanence rely, where do they abide, and upon what basis do they speculate on the past extremity, and openly declare and assert, "The self and the world are eternal"? Monks, here, some contemplatives and Brahmins... up to, having established their minds in equanimity, they accurately recall eighty cycles of destruction and formation. The rest is as before, and they think to themselves, "The self and the world are eternal..." Thus, these sentient beings, endowed with knowledge, wander everywhere.
