These are some ascetics and Brahmins who, having accepted offerings with faith, maintain themselves through wrong livelihood. For example, the result of the sun and moon moving in their proper paths is like this. The result of the sun and moon moving off their proper paths is also like this. The result of the planets, sun, and moon moving in their proper paths, and the burning of the quarters from falling stars, and the sound of divine drums from the sky is like this. The result of the planets, sun, and moon moving off their proper paths, and the burning of the quarters from falling stars, and the sound of divine drums from the sky, and also the sun and moon being so powerful and having such miraculous abilities is like this. Not understanding the arising and passing away, and the establishment of defilement and purification, is because of the right and wrong paths. Gautama has abandoned those who maintain themselves through wrong livelihood by means of wrong livelihood. How is he utterly secluded from desires? Gautama is endowed with these noble aggregates of moral conduct, dwells guarding the doors of the senses, is always mindful, guards his mind with mindfulness, and establishes it in a state of equanimity. When he looks at forms with his eyes, he does not grasp at characteristics, because he has undertaken the restraint of the faculty of the mind. Gautama is endowed with this aggregate of moral conduct and this guarding of the doors of the senses, and also dwells with awareness in going and coming, and from looking and examining to dispelling the weariness of sleep, he also dwells with awareness. Gautama is endowed with this noble aggregate of moral conduct and this guarding of the doors of the senses, and because he is endowed with this supreme mindfulness and awareness, from dwelling on a comfortable bed, being secluded from desires, secluded from sinful and unwholesome dharmas, possessing investigation and analysis, joy and happiness born of seclusion, up to dwelling having perfected the first dhyana. That is how he is secluded from desires. Monks, which dharmas
