Those who contemplate the extremes and abide in views pertaining to the future, even if they strive upwards, they are all in the water of views, and thus fall under the power of the evil one, and are taken into his hand. The evil one does with them as he pleases. Monks, those ascetics and Brahmins who contemplate the past extreme and speak of permanence, declaring, 'The self and the world are permanent,' this is their open declaration. This is based on four grounds. Monks, those ascetics and Brahmins who are not wise, who are ignorant, who are heedless and dwell in delusion, should be understood as existing, for they are driven by existence. Monks, those ascetics and Brahmins who contemplate the future extreme, who speak of attaining Nirvana in the present life, openly declare attaining Nirvana in the present life, and openly declare, up to 'This is based on four grounds.' Those ascetics and Brahmins who are not wise, who are ignorant, who are heedless and dwell in delusion, should be understood as existing, for they are driven by existence. Monks, those ascetics and Brahmins who contemplate the past extreme and speak of permanence, declaring, 'The self and the world are permanent,' this is their open declaration. This is based on four grounds. If it is said that things that arise dependently can exist independently of dependent arising, that is impossible. Those who declare attaining Nirvana in the present life, openly declare attaining Nirvana in the present life, and openly declare, up to 'This is based on five grounds.'

Those who speak of liberation declare and manifestly express liberation in the Dharma of direct vision, like this, up to the five foundations. Moreover, that which arises from the cause of contact, other than the feeling arising from the contact of existence, has no place. Monks, whatever the six sources of consciousness are, their arising, ceasing, tasting, and faults are thoroughly understood as they are; in this way, they are even more thoroughly understood as they are. Monks, for those who are completely afflicted, who have the plague of rebirth, whose suffering is fully ripened, and who are followed by old age and death in the next life, the Tathagata has abandoned and completely knows them, cutting them off from the root like the top of a palm tree, causing them to arise without an object of existence, and becoming of the nature of not being born in the next life. When this Dharma category was taught, this three-thousandfold great thousandfold world realm shook in three ways, greatly shook, and completely greatly shook. It trembled, greatly trembled, and completely greatly trembled. It vibrated, greatly vibrated, and completely greatly vibrated. At that time, the venerable Ananda was sitting at the edge of the Blessed One's robe, holding a fan, fanning the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One: Venerable One, what is the name of this Dharma category? How should it be held? Ananda, therefore, this Dharma category should also be held as the Net of Causes. It should also be held as the Net of Meaning, the Net of Dharma, and the Net of Brahma. Therefore, the name Brahma's Net is the technical term for this Dharma category. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said. The intermediate verses are: Constant and solitary, without cause and, with end, thus abandoning gods and humans. Those with perception and without perception, annihilation and nirvana, asceticism and all ignorance, dependence and contact, monks and, cause and meaning, Dharma is the same, the last is Brahma's Net. The Brahma's Net is complete. The Brahma Net Sutra.
