This following of conduct is the second basis. What it relies on, named "what," is as before. Monks, some contemplatives and brahmins speculate on the past extreme, being those who arise without a cause, openly declaring and stating, 'The self and the world arise from no cause.' All of those are based on these two foundations, no more and no less. Thus, those who have gone to views, those who hold in this way and regard as supreme in this way, the Tathagata fully knows as they are, and even more fully knows as they are. Knowing in this way, they do not hold as supreme; not holding as supreme, they also know that they themselves have attained nirvana, and the destination of those who have gone to views in that way is like this, the birth is like this, the future life is like this, the Tathagata fully knows as they are, and even more fully knows as they are. Those the Tathagata fully knows as they are, and even more fully knows as they are, and also does not hold as supreme. Not holding as supreme, knowing that they themselves have attained nirvana, having comprehended the cessation of the arising aggregates and feelings, and knowing, 'This is suffering, this is the definite cessation of suffering.' Monks, those other dharmas that are profound and appear as profound, as before. Monks, which dharmas are other, profound, and appear as profound, up to 'what are those,' is as before. Monks, some contemplatives and brahmins speculate on the past extreme, being those with and without limit, openly declaring and stating, 'The self and the world are neither with limit nor without limit.' Those that exist are like this, based on these four foundations. Those wise contemplatives and brahmins, relying on what, abiding in what, dwelling where, speculate on the past extreme, being those with and without limit, openly declaring and stating, 'The self and the world are both with limit and without limit.' It is like this, based on these four foundations. Monks, here, a contemplative and

Some wise Brahmins, whether dwelling in monasteries, or dwelling under trees, or dwelling in empty houses, through causes arising from diligence, causes arising from renunciation, causes arising from meditation, causes arising from repeated practice, and causes arising from proper attention, are able to touch such a samadhi of peaceful mind. Having thus stilled the mind, they abide in a state of having the perception of the world as finite. They think thus: 'Because the world is finite, therefore I should think thus, the world is finite and completely terminated, so whether I dwell in a monastery, or dwell under a tree, or dwell in an empty house,' and so on, until 'I shall abide in a state of having the perception of the world as finite.' This is the same as before. Thus, the world is finite and completely terminated, this is the first basis. 'Relying on what,' etc., is the same as before. Secondly, what do wise ascetics and Brahmins rely on and where do they abide, etc.? Here, some ascetics and Brahmins, whether dwelling in monasteries, or dwelling under trees, or dwelling in empty houses, are the same as before. Having thus stilled the mind, they abide in a state of having the perception of the world as infinite. They think thus: 'Because the world is infinite and immeasurable, therefore I should think thus, the world is infinite and immeasurable, so whether I dwell in a monastery, or dwell under a tree, or dwell in an empty house,' and so on, until 'Having thus stilled the mind, I shall abide in a state of having the perception of the world as infinite.' Thus, the world is infinite and immeasurable, this is the second basis. 'Relying on what, where do they abide,' etc., is the same as before. Thirdly, what do wise ascetics and Brahmins rely on and where do they abide, etc., is the same as before. Here, some ascetics and Brahmins, whether dwelling in monasteries, or dwelling under trees, etc., until having stilled the mind, they have the perception of the upper and lower worlds as finite, while the transverse world is perceived as infinite.

As before, up to 'resides as one who has the perception of being knowledgeable.' He thinks thus: 'The world above and below has an end, but directly it is endless.' Therefore, he thinks thus: 'Above and below has an end, but directly it is endless.' Whether I dwell in the wilderness, or dwell under a tree, this is the third basis: As before, up to 'relying on what, and dwelling where?' The fourth is from 'What do ascetics and brahmins who are knowledgeable rely on and dwell where?' as before. Here, some ascetics and brahmins who are knowledgeable, whether dwelling in the wilderness or dwelling under a tree, and when the mind is placed in equanimity, reside as those who have the perception of the world not being finite and the perception of not being infinite. He thinks thus: 'This world is neither finite nor infinite.' Therefore, he thinks thus: 'The world is neither finite nor infinite.' Whether I dwell in the wilderness, or dwell under a tree, or dwell in an empty room, etc., when the mind is placed in equanimity, one should reside as one who has the perception of the world not being finite and the perception of not being infinite. Thus, the world is neither finite nor infinite, this is the fourth basis: As before, up to 'relying on what, and dwelling where?' Some ascetics and brahmins speculate on the past extreme, being finite and infinite, saying and declaring, 'I and the world are finite and infinite.' All of those rely on these four bases. The Tathagata knows them exactly as they are, without exceeding or diminishing them, and knows them even more completely and exactly as they are. Thus, these who have gone to views, holding in this way, supremely holding in this way, taking in this way, and behaving in this way, are as before. Monks, whatever other teachings appear profound, are as before. Monks, whatever teachings appear profound to others.
