Or, what is called "mind," or what is called "consciousness," that is permanent, stable, true, and not subject to change. Some think so. Thus, some are permanent and some are impermanent. Relying on what, dwelling on what, and settling on what, do they speculate on the past? Some are eternalists, explicitly stating and declaring that some of the self and the world are permanent. This is the second basis. The third is that some ascetics and Brahmins with knowledge, relying on what, dwelling on what, and settling on what, do they speculate on the past? Some are eternalists, explicitly stating and declaring that some of the self and the world are permanent. Monks, there are those in the desire realm called gods intoxicated by play. When they are very happy and content, and reside in that state, among those beings who are happy and content, the body becomes weary and the memory becomes confused. Those beings with memory pass away and transmigrate from that place. For example, some beings whose lifespan is exhausted, whose karma is exhausted, and whose merit is exhausted, pass away from that place and transmigrate here, sharing the same fate as humans. Because their faculties are fully matured and they have grown up, they shave their hair and beards, put on saffron robes, and with true faith, go forth from home to homelessness. Whether they dwell in a secluded place, under a tree, or in an empty house, they attain such a samadhi of peaceful mind through the causes of diligence, renunciation, meditation, repeated practice, and proper attention. When they are thus equipoised, they accurately remember their previous body. They think to themselves: Among those in the desire realm called gods intoxicated by play, those who do not reside in great joy and contentment are permanent, stable, true, and not subject to change. Moreover, we dwell with minds full of joy and contentment, so we are impermanent, unstable, untrue, unreliable, and

It is the nature of change. Thus, some say it is permanent, and some say it is impermanent. What is the basis for saying this, etc., is as before. This is the third basis. The fourth is that some learned ascetics and Brahmins rely on what, abide in what, and fix on what, and speculate about the past, and some say it is permanent, saying that the self and the world are permanent. Those who explicitly speak and declare this are the monks, in the desire realm there are gods called the mind-distracted. When do they look at each other very closely with their eyes? When they look at each other very closely with their eyes, because of mind-distraction and mind-anger, those beings will die and transmigrate from that place. If some beings whose lifespan is exhausted, whose karma is exhausted, and whose merit is exhausted die and transmigrate from that place, they will come here and share the same fate as humans. Because of the cause of their senses being fully matured and developed, from there to remembering their past lives, etc., is as before. They think, in the desire realm, among those gods called mind-distracted, those who do not look at each other very closely with their eyes are permanent, steadfast, constant, and of unchanging nature. And we are those who look at each other very closely with our eyes, we are impermanent, not steadfast, unreliable, and of changing nature. Thus, some say it is permanent, and some say it is impermanent. Relying on what, abiding in what, and fixing on what, they speculate about the past, and some say it is permanent, saying that the self and the world are permanent. This is the fourth basis. Monks, all those ascetics and Brahmins who speculate about the past, saying that the self and the world are permanent, explicitly speaking and declaring, all rely on these four bases. Not more, not less, thus those who go to see, those who hold in this way, the Tathagata knows them as they truly are, as before. Monks, whatever other dharmas appear deep and profound, pure and clear, I have realized them through my own direct knowledge.

Having become fully enlightened, I have taught it. Others also praise and extol the Tathagata truthfully as he is. Monks, what are the dharmas that appear profound, pure, and completely purified to others, which I, through my own direct knowledge, having become fully enlightened, have taught, and which others also praise and extol the Tathagata truthfully as he is? Monks, some ascetics and Brahmins speculate about the past, believing that things arise without a cause, and openly declare and assert, "I and the world arise without a cause." This is the second case. Monks, upon what do those wise ascetics and Brahmins rely, where do they abide, and upon what basis do they speculate about the past, openly declaring and asserting, "I and the world arise without a cause"? These are the two cases. Monks, in the realm of form, because the gods of the non-perceptual beings arise in perception, those beings will die and transmigrate from that place. If some beings die and transmigrate from that place, and here share the same fate as humans, they will correctly remember the arising of perception in the past, just as before. They think, "I and the world arise without a cause." Therefore, I think that I and the world arise without a cause, that I did not exist before, but now I exist. This is the first case. Upon what do they rely, etc., just as before. The second case is that wise ascetics and Brahmins rely upon what, abide where, etc., just as before. Here, some are thinkers, abiding in a state of being immersed in speculation, arising from their own pride, are ordinary people, following speculation, they think, "I and the world arise without a cause." Therefore, I think that I and the world arise without a cause, that I am a speculator, a thinker, abiding in a state of being immersed in speculation, arising from my own pride, and am an ordinary person.
