Thereafter, those eight wet nurses nurtured him with milk, yogurt, butter, clarified butter, the essence of butter, and all other excellent things, causing him to grow rapidly like a lotus in a pond. When he had grown up, he was made to study writing, and he mastered writing. He became proficient in the five arts of kings and royalty. That youth, Fortunate Strength, was also endowed with faith, virtuous, with good thoughts, engaged in benefiting himself and others, compassionate, magnanimous, desiring the Dharma, loving beings, craving to give, delighting in generosity, exceedingly rejoicing in giving all, completely giving all, giving all without attachment, abiding in great generosity. Thus, to monks, Brahmins, the destitute, and the poor, he gave and completely gave even his own flesh. When beggars came to beg, he would approach them with a loving heart, look up at the sky, and think, 'Alas, if only gold, silver, clothes, food, drink, bedding, or whatever else they desire, could come to me from the sky!'. When he made this aspiration, those things would come to him, but no one knew this. He completely fulfilled the wishes of the beggars with those things, and then they would depart. His fame filled the entire Jambudvipa, and his voice resounded from the entire world of the Nagas below to the world of Brahma above. Then, one day, the youth Fortunate Strength, together with his four elder brothers, went to wander in a pleasure garden with great wealth. On the way, they saw many hungry ghosts with mouths as small as needles and bellies as large as Mount Meru, resembling skeletons, with bodies burning intensely, surrounded by thousands of joined palms. No one except the youth Fortunate Strength could see those hungry ghosts. Then, those hungry ghosts said to the youth Fortunate Strength: 'Youth, you are great because of your merit.'

If you are truly great compassion, please grant food and drink to us who are exhausted by hunger and thirst! We are under the control of stinginess, and born in the world of pretas, we cannot even find water for hundreds of years, let alone see food. After saying these words, the mind of the young Sonam Tob was moved by compassion, and he quickly looked up at the sky, thinking: Alas, if the food and drink of the gods could come to me, how wonderful would that be! Then, suddenly, the food and drink of the gods came from the sky. Then, the young Sonam Tob began to satisfy the pretas with the food and drink of the gods. After a while, those pretas, due to the sins of their past karma, could not see the food and drink, and said: Young man, you are known as a compassionate person, why do you not satisfy us? The young man said: These foods and drinks of the gods have been given, what is wrong with these foods that you do not eat? The pretas said: Young man, due to the sins of our past karma, we cannot see those foods and drinks of the gods. Then, the young Sonam Tob was unhappy and thought: Alas, this is a manifestation of stinginess! Then, he spread love to those pretas, generated the mind of enlightenment, and spoke these words: If there is power in merit, by this truth and the words of truth, may these pretas see and eat these foods and drinks of the gods as they truly are! As soon as the young man spoke, the pretas no longer wrongly perceived the foods and drinks of the gods, and their mouths returned to normal. Then, the young Sonam Tob was very happy and satisfied those pretas with the foods and drinks of the gods. Those pretas obtained food and drink that they had never tasted before, and because they were extremely hungry and thirsty, they ate too much, their stomachs burst, and they died with joy in their hearts towards the young Sonam Tob, and were reborn in the heavenly realm of Tushita, saying to the young Sonam Tob: Young man, you have placed us in the heavenly realm of Tushita.

May you be exceedingly happy! Now, relying on you, I will give alms and perform virtuous deeds." Having said this, the youth Sonam Tob (བསོད་ནམས་སྟོབས།, Power of Merit) was overjoyed and said, "Excellent!" Then he went to the garden. After that, he sat in that garden and began to proclaim and ascertain such truthful words: "What do people consider most important?" Then, the handsome youth said, "What is there to investigate in this? This is what the world understands. Appearance is what people consider most important. Why is that? Because seeing someone with a good appearance, even people who have never seen them before become very happy, and even those who are not manifestly happy become happy. The former sages also said that a good appearance is half of all gains. Furthermore, you see, people with a pleasing appearance make people happy just by seeing them, and they are revered from the heart, just as holy people treat the supreme Dharma." Having heard these words from the handsome one, the diligent one said, "What is the use of appearance? Only diligence is what people consider most important. Why is that? Because for someone who has a good appearance but no diligence, no desired result of this life or the next is seen or heard. Saying that appearance is important is merely a way to delude foolish people. Diligence achieves the desired results even in this very life, such as the grain of those who plow the fields, the profit of merchants, the livelihood of those who serve, the understanding of treatises by the wise, the attainment of the fruits of meditation by meditators, and so on. These are the fruits of desire in this life that are visible through diligence. The fruits of the next life are like this: obtaining happy migrations and the world of the gods, great wealth, obtaining liberation, and so on. These are also the fruits of the next life that are visible through diligence. Furthermore, diligence is virtue.
