The narration of the realization of the power of merit. The narration of the realization of the power of merit. In Indian language: Punya bala avadana. In Tibetan language: The narration of the realization of the power of merit. Volume 1. Homage to the Buddha! Thus I have heard, once, the Blessed One was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park. Then, the Blessed One told the monks: Monks, some foolish people possess three non-dharmic qualities, they do not give alms, do not perform meritorious deeds, and do not properly uphold the precepts and abide by them. What are the three? Namely, attachment, miserliness, and heedlessness. Monks, some foolish people, possessing these three non-dharmic qualities, do not give alms, do not perform meritorious deeds, and do not properly uphold and abide by them, and after the destruction of their body and death, they fall into evil destinies, and are born in the hells of sentient beings. Monks, a virtuous man possesses three qualities, he gives alms, performs meritorious deeds, and properly upholds the precepts and abides by them. What are the three? Namely, non-attachment, being free from the stain of miserliness, and being mindful. Monks, a virtuous man possessing these three qualities gives alms, performs meritorious deeds, and properly upholds the precepts and abides by them, and after the destruction of his body and death, he is born in happy destinies, among the gods in the heavenly realms. The Blessed One thus declared, and the Sugata having spoken thus, thereafter the Teacher further spoke thus: Because of miserliness and heedlessness, One does not perform the act of giving, Therefore, one who desires merit, Should give with wisdom. The fear of the miserly is, There is no suffering greater than hunger and thirst, Why fear and not give, Those who do not give suffer their own fear. Between this world and the next, Their children are bound by it. If there are those who abandon miserliness, And give alms at the right time, Though they die, it is as if they have not died, They are rich.

Like a good guide, those who give away things that are very difficult to give away, whether little or much, giving away what is difficult to give is doing a difficult task. Those who are not virtuous do not understand this, for the virtuous do not transgress the Dharma. Therefore, the virtuous should give virtuously. When one dies from here, those who are not virtuous go to hell, while the virtuous go to heaven. There is no refuge for those who are tormented by old age, and because life is short, the time of taking life is near. Those who see this fear of death should apply their merit there, and we should act accordingly. What is the point of abandoning women and living here in abandonment? Even if one gives a small amount with joy, it is better than performing a hundred thousand sacrifices of a thousand offerings, not even one-sixteenth of it. Why is it that a vast and grand sacrifice cannot follow the path of a compatible sacrifice? How can a thousand sacrifices of a thousand offerings not be one-sixteenth of it? Because here children are killed and imprisoned, and the wealth of others is given away, they are pitifully destroyed. With tearful faces and sacrifices with punishment, such offerings cannot follow a compatible path. Thus, a vast and grand sacrifice cannot follow a compatible path, and thus a thousand sacrifices of a thousand offerings are not even one-sixteenth of it. Some people are not deceitful, and they give away wealth obtained according to the Dharma, and by giving away what is difficult to give, they go to the heavenly realms by their own merit. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, he rose from his seat and went to the Naga forest. Having gone there, he entered the dense forest, and for the sake of dwelling during the day, he stayed and sat under a tree. At that time, many monks gathered in the assembly hall, and as they sat, they discussed: Venerable ones, what is the example that people rely on? At that time, the son of the Blessed One's aunt, the Venerable Ananda, and the Venerable Drona-jana, the twenty-crore one, and the Venerable Aniruddha, and the Venerable Shariputra, etc., were also gathered in that assembly and sat down. Then, the Venerable Ananda said: Venerable ones, appearance is
