is what people need. The venerable Drokzhin Kye Jiewa Nyishu said: Venerable ones, diligence is what people need. The venerable Ma Gagpa said: Venerable ones, craftsmanship is what people need. The venerable Sharibu said: Venerable ones, only wisdom is what people need. After they said this, they said: Venerable ones, we are all inconsistent, and we have made various distinctions like this. Let us go to the Blessed One and report this matter, and we will accept whatever the Blessed One instructs us. After saying this, the venerable ones thought that the Blessed One is: the teacher, the great compassionate one; the all-knowing one, who dispels doubts; he is the cutter of сомняi; like the sun dispelling darkness; the only protector of sentient beings entangled in the net of suffering and abiding on the wrong path; like the supreme father of sons. Therefore, to the one who is independent in all dharmas, who strives for the benefit of all sentient beings, the able one who cuts сомняi, let us all ask. The great knot of сомняi, because the Victorious One is able to cut it. Therefore, let us report everything from the root to the Thus-Gone One. After saying this, many monks prepared to go to see the Blessed One. While the Blessed One was staying in the dense forest for the sake of resting during the day, many monks gathered in the monastery and sat down, discussing the situation at that time. The pure divine ear of the gods, which transcends humans, heard it. After hearing it, he arose from that samadhi and went to where the monastery was located. After going, in the middle of the community of monks, he sat on the seat that had been prepared. After sitting down, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, what kind of talk were the many monks who gathered in the monastery and sat down discussing at that time? Now, for what kind of talk have you gathered and sat down? They replied: Venerable one, we, the many monks who have gathered in this monastery, at that time, like this, venerable ones, what is it that people need?

said, "Yes, yes." To that, the venerable Ananda reported: "Venerable ones, appearance is what people admire." The venerable Koti-simbali-vimsa-koti reported: "Venerable ones, diligence is what people admire." The venerable Aniruddha reported: "Venerable ones, skill is what people admire." The venerable Sariputra reported: "Venerable ones, wisdom is what people admire." Monks, we thought this: "Venerable ones, we are all different, and after examining each other in this way, we will go to the Blessed One and report this matter. Whatever the Blessed One instructs us, we will follow." Monks, we, many monks, gathered in the assembly hall and discussed this matter. Now we have gathered for this discussion. Then, the Blessed One, based on that foundation, spoke in verse: The appearance and skill of beings, Diligence and other wisdom, Are born from merit, Therefore, merit is supreme. After speaking, the Blessed One said to the monks: Monks, whatever it may be, it is only for a while, not always admired by everyone. Merit is admired by all beings at all times. Monks, like this, I have not truly seen any other dharma that is admired by beings like merit. Monks, why? In the past, in a certain royal palace, there was a king named Light Power. When he was king, it was prosperous, flourishing, peaceful, and bountiful, filled with people and the populace. That king had a queen named All-Joy, who was beautiful in appearance, pleasing to the eye, and very beautiful. One day, he played and rejoiced with the queen All-Joy. While he was playing and rejoicing with her, a son with a

That place was beautiful and pleasing to the eye, surpassing human colors. A child was born who had not attained the colors of the gods. When he was born, a birth celebration was held. After the birth celebration, he was named "Body Strength." Similarly, gradually, after that, she gave birth to three sons. Among them, one was called "Endeavor-Possessed," the second was called "Craft-Possessed," and the third was called "Wisdom-Possessed." Later, after some time, the queen, radiant, became pregnant. On the very day she became pregnant, suddenly a rain of various kinds of gold fell around the palace. Also, a great divine canopy adorned with various jewels appeared above the queen. Then, King Bright Power saw this miracle and was greatly astonished. He said to the diviners, "Alas, what is this unprecedented miracle that has occurred?" The diviners replied, "O divine queen, a son has entered your womb. This is known to be a great merit, the power of that sentient being." Then, the king heard this and was greatly astonished. After some time, the queen had such a desire in her mind: 'Alas, if I could sit on a lion throne, holding a white umbrella above me, and also holding a jewel-handled yak-tail fan, how wonderful that would be!' She told the king about this. Then, the king became very happy and ordered the city to be decorated beautifully, and he had everything done accordingly. Whatever desire arose in her mind, it was fulfilled. Then, again, she thought in her mind: 'Alas, if I could sit on a pile of gold and silver, and give alms with my own hands, and perform virtuous deeds, and make those without wealth possess wealth, how wonderful that would be!' Such a desire arose, and she told the king about it. Then, the king had it done accordingly, and whatever desire arose in her mind, it was fulfilled. Then, again, she thought in her mind: 'Alas, if all the prisoners could be released, how wonderful that would be!' Then, in order to dispel the desire that arose in her mind, the king had all the prisoners released, and whatever desire arose in her mind, it was fulfilled. Then, again,
