Thus, kings and great ministers, as well as wealthy people, palace attendants, merchants, ship captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas revered, respected, honored as teachers, took as models, and made offerings to the Buddha, the Bhagavan. The Buddha, the Bhagavan, who was worshiped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, possessed great merit and had obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medical supplies, was dwelling in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika, in the garden of Prince Jeta, together with a community of Shravakas. At that time, in Shravasti, there lived a ship captain who was rich, possessed much wealth, enjoyed abundance, had vast and extensive holdings, possessed the wealth of Vaishravana (Tibetan: རྣམ་ཐོས་ཀྱི་བུ།), and rivaled the wealth of Vaishravana. He took a wife from his own clan, and together with her, he played, rejoiced, and indulged in pleasure. At that time, a terrible famine occurred, and even begging could not obtain food. The diviners also predicted that there would be no rain. After some time, the ship captain's wife became pregnant, and after eight or nine months, she gave birth to a son. The boy was handsome, pleasing to look at, beautiful, and possessed all limbs. On the very day that the boy was born, the drought disappeared. Thereafter, his fame spread throughout all of Shravasti. Then, they held a birth celebration for him and discussed what name to give the boy. The relatives said, "Because his fame has spread everywhere, therefore, let us name this boy 'Fame Friend' (Tibetan: གྲགས་བཤེས་)." Then, the boy Fame Friend was entrusted to eight nurses: two to nurture him in their laps, two to nurse him, two to clean his dirt, and two to play with him. These eight nurses fed him with milk, yogurt, butter, ghee, and the essence of ghee.

And, furthermore, nourished by all the excellent qualities of provisions, he grew rapidly like a lotus in the sea. Then, when the boy, famous and far-renowned, grew up, the prince went to the Victory Banner Garden for some business. Then, he saw the Buddha, the Bhagavan, whose body was adorned with the thirty-two major marks of a great person, beautified by the eighty minor marks, surrounded by a fathom of light, possessing light surpassing a thousand suns, like a mountain of jewels, all good, and as soon as he saw him, he developed faith. Having developed faith, he prostrated at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat before the Bhagavan in order to listen to the Dharma. Then, the Bhagavan taught him such a Dharma that would cause him to become weary of samsara. Having heard it, he regarded samsara as a fault and nirvana as a virtue, and after asking his parents, he went forth in the teachings of the Bhagavan. Through diligence, practice, and effort, he realized that this wheel of samsara, the five-eyed illusion, is shaking and unstable, and he thoroughly understood that the nature of all conditioned phenomena is decay, fall, dissipation, and destruction. Having abandoned all defilements, he directly realized the state of an Arhat. The Arhat, having become free from the desire of the three realms, regarded gold and gravel as equal, possessed a mind as clear as the sky and the palm of his hand, and became as cool as sandalwood soaked in water. He shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, and attained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual self-realization. He did not crave worldly gain, attachment, and respect. He became a place where the gods and their retinues offered, remembered, and respectfully praised. From his two teeth flowed water endowed with eight qualities, therefore he had no suffering of thirst. When thirsty monks gathered in the refectory during the hot season, he would not come. Then, the monks who were close to him asked: Why do you not have the suffering of thirst? He said: From my two teeth flows water endowed with eight qualities.

endowed with eight qualities, therefore I have no harm from thirst. Then, the monks arose with doubts, and in order to dispel all doubts, they asked the Buddha, the Blessed One: "Venerable Grags-bshes, what deeds did he perform that made him have a good appearance, be pleasing to look at and beautiful, and from his two teeth come forth water endowed with eight qualities, and also, having gone forth, he directly realized the state of an Arhat?" The Blessed One said: "Monks, Grags-bshes himself, in other past lives, having accumulated merits and being endowed with the completion of conditions, appeared like a fierce animal crossing a river, and because he did and accumulated those deeds that would not be devoured by demons, how could others experience those deeds done and accumulated by Grags-bshes himself? Monks, the deeds done and accumulated do not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor do they ripen in the realm of water, fire, or wind, but the good and bad deeds done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, elements, and sense bases that are grasped. The deeds of sentient beings will not be lost even after hundreds of eons. When the conditions gather and the time arrives, they will ripen into their own fruit. Monks, in the past, in the past time, in this very fortunate eon, when the life span of beings was twenty thousand years, the perfectly completed Buddha, endowed with knowledge and conduct, the Sugata, the Knower of the World, the unsurpassed tamer of beings, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha, the Blessed One, named 'Od-srung' (Light Protector), appeared in the world, and he dwelt and resided in the Deer Park where the sages spoke in the city of Varanasi. Then, after a while, the son of a merchant went forth to an old monk, but he was lazy and unwilling to serve others. Then, those who practiced the same Brahma-conduct appointed that very elder to do the service, and he thought, 'I am the one who does the service,' and he widely accepted the service of the very old monks, so his roots of virtue were exhausted, and later, after a while, he was afflicted by illness, and the elder
