Having arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, and then sat down on one side. The venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana then instructed, taught, encouraged, and delighted the four assemblies with a Dharma talk. If there is no inconvenience for you, venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana, please go to the place where the Blessed One is, pay homage to his feet, and ask if he is well, if he is free from trouble, if he is light and easy, if he is healthy, if he is strong, if he is happy, if he has no discomfort, and if he dwells in comfort. And also say this: 'Venerable, the four assemblies of Jambudvīpa wish to see the Blessed One.' Say this: 'Venerable, the people of Jambudvīpa do not have the miraculous powers and abilities to go to the heaven of the Thirty-three (त्रयस्त्रिंश, trayastriṃśa, Thirty-three) to behold the Blessed One, to go directly and to serve him. But the gods of the Thirty-three have the miraculous powers and abilities to go to Jambudvīpa to behold the Blessed One, to go directly and to serve him.' Among the retinue, there are gods like those who, having known the Buddha and possessing faith, were born here after the dissolution of their bodies! There are also those who, having known the Dharma and the Sangha, and the precepts pleasing to the noble ones, possessing faith, were born here after the dissolution of their bodies! Then, the Blessed One, considering that it agreed with what the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana had said, spoke thus to the venerable Mahāmaudgalyāyana: Mahāmaudgalyāyana, it is so, it is so. Alas! The retinue of gods is assembled and seated in various ways. Among the retinue of gods, there are gods like those who, having known the Buddha and possessing faith, were born here after the dissolution of their bodies!
