Very well. Then, King Prasenajit of Kosala fainted and fell to the ground. Then, after being sprinkled with water, he regained consciousness and, with his mind calmed, was helped up by the charioteer's son, Long Son. Then, King Prasenajit went to the Blessed One and, prostrating at the Blessed One's feet, said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, I have seen a wonderful thing. That Shakya king, Good Abode, wearing tattered clothes, carrying poor food, behaving in a way that neither gods nor men believe, begging alms with extremely peaceful conduct, having emerged again from a lowly family, I think thus. The Blessed One's teachings are extremely subdued. Relying on them, living so happily, with comfort in between, and those nourished by happiness also becoming so subdued, is truly amazing!" The Blessed One said: "Great King, there are other more amazing things about this Good Abode, listen. This Great King Good Abode, whether he dwells in a hermitage, or under a tree, or in an empty house, will say: 'Oh, how happy! Oh, how happy!' When I had not yet renounced, I lived in the king's palace, and although I was well guarded by great ministers, townspeople, and villagers, and protected by walls, moats, gates, and wild beasts, I suspected others in my heart, was unhappy, and was always wary of everyone, so that I could not even sleep. But now I do not even care for my body and life, so wherever I live, I can live in peace.' He would repeat these words of joy three times. Then, the monks became doubtful and asked the Buddha, the Blessed One, who cuts off all doubts: "Venerable Good Abode, what deeds did he do and accumulate in past lives that made him have a good appearance, be pleasing to look at, be beautiful, be born into a wealthy royal family, and also realize the state of an Arhat after renouncing?" The Blessed One said: "Monks, Good Abode himself, in past lives, accumulated merit and possessed the necessary conditions, like crossing a difficult ford, he did and accumulated those deeds that would not be devoured by demons, so Good

Who else will experience the karma you have done and accumulated? Monks, the karma done and accumulated will not ripen in the external realm of earth, nor will it ripen in the realm of water, fire, or wind. The virtuous and non-virtuous karma done and accumulated will only ripen in the aggregates, realms, and sources that are grasped. The actions of sentient beings will not be exhausted even in hundreds of eons. When they gather and the time arrives, they will ripen into fruition. Monks, in the past, in the city of Varanasi, a beggar lived there, oppressed by hunger and weakness, wandering around, and saw a woman carrying a child. Then, because the beggar wanted the bundle, he chased after the woman, forcibly snatched the bundle, and fled in all directions. The woman also followed closely behind. Then, the beggar fearlessly jumped into the Ganges River. In times when Buddhas do not appear, solitary realizers (Pratyekabuddhas) who are poor and destitute live in remote places with compassion, and are the sole objects of veneration in the world, appear in the world. Once, a solitary realizer came before the beggar. Then, the beggar saw the solitary realizer with peaceful conduct and felt great joy. With that great joy, he dedicated his suffering and offered the bundle to the solitary realizer. Then, in order to increase his great joy, the solitary realizer rose into the sky like a swan king spreading its wings, and displayed various kinds of miracles. Then, the beggar saw that extremely wondrous miracle that made gods and humans believe, and prostrated at his feet like a tree being cut from its roots, and made the aspiration: "By the root of virtue of offering to the accomplished teacher, and by generating the mind of enlightenment, and by completely giving away the Dharma to be given, may I be born into a high lineage wherever I am born, and may I obtain such Dharmas! May I also please teachers who are even more excellent than this."
