It should be entrusted, bhikkhu, you should train yourself accordingly. After the Blessed One had spoken thus, the monks rejoiced and greatly praised what the Blessed One had said. The so-called Well-Dwelling One, the Buddha, the Blessed One, was honored by kings, great ministers, wealthy people, people of the palace retinue, merchants, ship captains, gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers. They revered him, made him their teacher, kept him in mind, and made offerings. The Buddha, the Blessed One, who was worshipped and known by gods, nagas, yakshas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and great belly-crawlers, possessed great merit and obtained robes, food, bedding, seats, medicine for the sick, and medicinal supplies. Together with the Sangha of Hearers, he resided in Shravasti, in the Jeta Grove of Prince Jeta, in the pleasure garden of Anathapindika. Then, when the Blessed One had attained complete enlightenment and twelve years had passed, when he went to the city of Kapilavastu, thousands of Shakyas, except for King Shuddhodana, saw the truth. Then King Shuddhodana, seeing the virtues of his son, was greatly amazed and thought: If my son had not renounced the world, he would have become a universal monarch, ruling in all four directions, possessing dharma, and becoming a king of dharma. But now, it is not beautiful that he has become a shaven-headed renunciate. I will make sure that at least one person from each Shakya family renounces the world. Then King Shuddhodana proclaimed in the city to gather all the Shakyas. Then, in the assembly of all the Shakyas, King Shuddhodana said: O Shakyas, listen to me. Even if the young Siddhartha had not renounced the world, you alone should attend to and honor him. Now that he has

Upali thought, "In order to make offerings to each household of the Shakya clan, let them renounce." Then, five hundred Shakya sons, including Bhadra Rakshita, Anivarta, Ship, and Devadatta, prepared to renounce. Then, Ananda, the barber who made offerings to them, saw them renounce and wept. Then, the Shakyas asked Ananda, "Why are you weeping?" Then, he said with a pitiable voice, with a sorrowful voice, mumbling, "If you renounce, who will now support me with food and clothing?" Then, the Shakyas said, "Ananda, then spread out a cloth." Then, after he spread out the cloth, the Shakyas piled up necklaces, semota, jewels, pearls, beryl, armlets, and rings that they wore on their bodies into a large heap and gave them to him. Then, the barber Ananda also saw those who had renounced, and also looked at the various kinds of ornaments, and a proper thought arose in his mind: "These Shakyas have lineage, appearance, youth, and wealth, but they have renounced their consorts and these ornaments like spittle. What is the use of sending these ornaments home now for someone like me who has nothing? It is better to abandon these and I will also follow them and renounce without hesitation." Then, the barber Ananda went to where the Blessed One was, and after arriving, prostrated at the feet of the Blessed One, and said to the Blessed One, "Blessed One, if even someone like us can renounce in the well-spoken Dharma-vinaya, and be ordained and receive the status of a bhikshu, then I also wish to practice brahmacharya in the presence of the Blessed One." Then, the Blessed One said, "Bhikshu, come!" And so he renounced. Then, Bhadra Rakshita and the five hundred Shakyas, dressed as bhikshus, prostrated to the Sangha of bhikshus including the Buddha, and they recognized Ananda's feet, because he had lineage, appearance, and wealth, so to Ananda...

Unable to pay homage, then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Bhadra: Bhadra, why do you not pay homage to this, not considering lineage, appearance, youth, power, and the four pure races? Thereafter, Bhadra and the five hundred Shakyas, by the power of Dharma, as if cutting off the roots of a tree, bowed their heads to the feet. At the moment when they bowed their heads to the feet, this great earth shook six times. Thereafter, the Venerable Bhadra, with diligence, practice, and effort, realized that this cycle of the five turbid worlds is shaking and unstable, and determined that all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of destruction, decay, disintegration, and annihilation. Having abandoned all defilements, he directly realized the state of Arhat. The Arhat, having become free from the desires of the three realms, regarded gold and dung as equal, possessed a mind like the sky and the palm of the hand, became as cool as sandalwood soaked in water, shattered the shell of ignorance with wisdom, attained wisdom, supernormal powers, and individual perfect knowledge, disregarding the gains, attachments, and respect of sentient beings, and became the object of offering, remembrance, and reverence by the gods and attendants. He was a great being, compassionate to the poor and afflicted. Then one morning, having put on the monastic skirt and Dharma robes, and carrying a bowl, he set out to beg for alms in Shravasti. Thereafter, he went to beg for alms at the house of a low-caste family. At that time, King Prasenajit of Kosala, riding an elephant king named White Lotus Alone, with the charioteer Gautama's son Elder, set out to see the Blessed One, and King Prasenajit of Kosala saw Bhadra subdue his senses, pacify his mind, his mind extremely gentle and close to peace, wearing tattered clothes, carrying poor food, coming out from that low-caste family. Having seen this, he asked the charioteer Gautama's son Elder: Is this not the Bhadra Bhikshu? The charioteer replied: As the god has said, that is he.
