The doers. Through the condition of actions, there is consciousness; through the condition of consciousness, there are name and form; through the condition of name and form, there are the six sense sources; through the condition of the six sense sources, there is contact; through the condition of contact, there is feeling; through the condition of feeling, there is craving; through the condition of craving, there is grasping; through the condition of grasping, there is becoming; through the condition of becoming, there is birth; through the condition of birth, there are aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, discomfort, and disturbances, and so on. Thus, this great mass of suffering completely arises. For example, if this does not exist, then this does not arise; if this ceases, then this ceases. For example, when ignorance ceases, actions cease; when actions cease, consciousness ceases; when consciousness ceases, name and form cease; when name and form cease, the six sense sources cease; when the six sense sources cease, contact ceases; when contact ceases, feeling ceases; when feeling ceases, craving ceases; when craving ceases, grasping ceases; when grasping ceases, becoming ceases; when becoming ceases, birth ceases; when birth ceases, aging and death, sorrow, lamentation, suffering, discomfort, and disturbances, and so on, cease. Thus, this great mass of suffering completely ceases. Monks, my Dharma is well-spoken, clearly distinguished, cutting off causes, and correctly and well-indicated to gods and humans and all others. Thus, the Dharma is well-spoken, clearly distinguished, cutting off causes, and correctly and well-indicated to gods and humans and all others. Therefore, a son of good family, having gone forth with faith, should strive in the Teacher's teachings; this is the only reason. It is the reason to apply oneself. It is the reason to be mindful. It is easy for the flesh and blood of the body to dry up completely, leaving only skin, water, and bones. Having commenced diligence in the Dharma, being endowed with power, being endowed with diligence, being endowed with joy, being endowed with strength and ability, and not abandoning effort, whatever is to be attained, one should not abandon diligence in the interim until it is attained. Why is that? Because the lazy one remains as if in suffering.

That is, sinful and unwholesome dharmas completely afflict, and also cause rebirth in existence, accompanied by epidemics, possessing the maturation of suffering, and mixed with future births and the changes of aging and death. Therefore, its great meaning will also completely decline. Initiating diligence is a peaceful dwelling, that is, sinful and unwholesome dharmas completely afflict, and also cause rebirth in existence, accompanied by epidemics, the maturation of suffering is not mixed with future births and the changes of aging and death. Therefore, its great meaning will also be completely fulfilled. Monks, for example, the teacher also dwells manifestly, and also teaches the Dharma, making it approach tranquility, making it completely escape suffering, making it approach perfect enlightenment. The scriptures spoken by the Sugata are truly the essence suitable for drinking. Monks, therefore, those who truly see the benefit of oneself, the benefit of others, and the benefit of both, should each diligently study this Dharma. How can we renunciates become meaningful, possess fruits, generate happiness, and become the maturation of happiness? Also, how can the offerings of clothes, food, bedding, cushions, medicine, and medicinal items that we enjoy become extremely great in fruition, extremely great in benefit, extremely great in blessings, and vast in scope? Monks, you should train in this way. When this category of Dharma was explained, King Kapina the Great, along with his retinue of eighty thousand ministers, destroyed twenty high peaks of the mountain of views of the aggregates with the vajra of wisdom, manifestly realized the fruit of stream-entry, saw the truth, and thus renounced in the teachings of the Bhagavan. Through diligence, practice, and effort, he realized that this wheel of samsara in the five degenerate ages is a wavering and unstable phenomenon, and thus determined that all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of collapse, fall, disintegration, and destruction, thereby abandoning all afflictions and becoming an Arhat.
